David Hazewinkel
David Hazewinkel (born September 8, 1944 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a retired American wrestler . He was runner- up in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight world champion in 1970 .
Career
David Hazewinkel began wrestling with his twin brother James at a Detroit high school. The greatest achievement he had during this period was winning the Michigan State High School Championship in 1962, where he won the flyweight free style. He was a member of the Minnesota Wrestling Club . David Hazewinkel later joined the US Army and now focused entirely on the Greco-Roman style.
In 1967 he was the first American master in the Greco-Roman style in flyweight. He replaced his brother James, who had won this title in 1966. In the same year David Hazewinkel was used at the World Championships in Bucharest . He defeated Berthold Bitterling from the GDR on this World Cup debut , but lost to Boško Marinko from Yugoslavia and Angel Keresow from Bulgaria and finished 11th.
In 1968 he started bantamweight at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . He defeated there u. a. European champion Christo Traikow from Bulgaria , but lost to Ion Baciu from Romania and the Egyptian Ibrahim El Sayed and took 8th place in the final score.
At the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata , Argentina , David Hazewinkel was greatly improved. He won there u. a. about Paul Neff from the FRG , Christo Traikow and Ion Baciu. In the final he also faced the Soviet athlete Rustem Kazakow , to whom he was defeated. He finished 3rd and won a medal for the first time at an international championship.
In 1970 he even surpassed this success, because he became vice world champion in bantamweight in Edmonton . In the fight for the world title he lost against the Japanese Ikuei Yamamoto.
At the World Championships in Sofia in 1971 , David Hazewinkel first got two wins, but then lost to his old rivals Christo Traikow and Ion Baciu and ended up in 7th place.
At the end of his international wrestling career, he then started again at the Olympic Games, namely in 1972 in Munich . However, he lost both fights there, and was eliminated after the 2nd round. He only reached 18th place.
After the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, David Hazewinkel ended his international wrestling career. He became a trainer at various US Army institutions such as the Marion Military Institute and other institutions such as the MMI Athletic Department at Pensacola Christian College.
