Ion Baciu

Ion Baciu (born May 12, 1944 in Tunari , Ilfov County ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He was world champion in 1967 and winner of the silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Greco-Roman style, each in the bantamweight division.

Career

Ion Baciu began wrestling as a teenager. After his great talent was recognized, he was delegated to Rapid Bucharest and later to Steaua Bucharest . He owed his great progress in the Greco-Roman style mainly to the coach Marin Belușica . After the 1965 bantamweight world champion Ion Cernea announced his resignation, Ion Baciu succeeded him as the representative of Romanian bantamweight wrestling.

Ion Baciu won a medal, the bronze, at his first start at an international championship, the 1966 European Championship in Essen . Also at the world championship this year in Toledo / USA he did well with the 5th place. In both championships he wrestled against Fritz Stange from the Federal Republic of Germany , who left both championships as the winner, and tied.

After a disappointing 12th place at the European Championships in Minsk in 1967 , in which he had a very difficult lot, he achieved the greatest triumph of his career at the World Championships that year. In his native Bucharest he became world champion with five wins and one draw . His victory over the Soviet starter Rustem Kasakow is particularly noteworthy .

Ion Baciu was also in excellent shape at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City . He defeated there in the bantamweight u. a. David Hazewinkel from the USA and Christo Traikow from Bulgaria and fought against the eventual Olympic champion in this weight class János Varga . A defeat against the Soviet athlete Ivan Kochergin prevented the already tangible Olympic victory . Ion Baciu had to be content with the silver medal .

In the further course of his career Ion Baciu won a silver medal at the 1970 European Championships in East Berlin and a bronze medal at the 1972 European Championships in Katowice . The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the bantamweight division, where Christo Traikow threw him out of the race, he finished in 6th place.

After his time as an active wrestler, during which he served in the Romanian Armed Forces, he trained as a sports teacher, which he completed in 1991.
