Farchat Achatowitsch Mustafin (also Farkhad or Farhat Mustafin ) (born September 7, 1950 ) is a former Soviet wrestler , multiple world and European champion and winner of the bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in the Greco-Roman style in the bantamweight division.

Career

Farchat Mustafin began wrestling as a youth and was delegated to the Central Sports Club of the Army (CSKA) in Moscow as a member of the Soviet armed forces at the beginning of the 1970s , because his extraordinary potential for the sport of wrestling had been discovered. In Moscow he became a world class athlete in Greco-Roman from his trainer W. Burylin. Shaped style.

In 1973 and 1974 Farchat was transformed from the Soviet Wrestling Federation to the major international tournament in Klippan in Sweden , where a large part of the world's elite met every spring to assess their position. Farchat won this major bantamweight tournament in both years. It was then used for the first time in 1974 at an international championship, namely the 1974 European Championship in Madrid . Farchat won the European title there with six superior victories. In the autumn of 1974 he also started at the World Championships in Katowice . There he was surprisingly defeated in a preliminary round match against the Swede Per Lindholm . But since Lindholm lost to Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia , who had won against Mustafin and was therefore eliminated early, Farchat Mustafin won the world title.

Farchat also suffered a defeat at the 1975 European Championships in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , this time against Ivan Frgić. So it was enough for him only to 2nd place in the bantamweight. He held himself harmless for it again at the 1975 World Cup in Minsk . He won five fights, defeating Pertti Ukkola from Finland and Józef Lipień from Poland .

After Farchat Mustafin had also won the European Championships in Leningrad in 1976 , he went to the Olympic Games in Montreal as a high favorite . There he met again on Ivan Frgić and lost to this on points. He also lost to Pertti Ukkola, who was in great shape, and therefore had to be satisfied with the bronze medal . Olympic champion was Pertti Ukkola.

Both at the European Championships in 1977 in Bursa and at the World Championships of the same year in Gothenburg Farchat won all of his fights, with one exception. At both events he lost in the final against Pertti Ukkola and was therefore only second winner behind Ukkola on both occasions.

In 1978, Farchat Mustafin moved to the next higher weight class, the featherweight, due to weight problems. At the Soviet championships of that year he found out that it would be difficult for him to assert himself in this weight class, because he finished in featherweight behind Boris Kramarenko , Nelson Dawidjan , Iwan Korchagin and others. Raidi Abramschwili only finished fifth. For this reason he was not used in any international championships this year.

In 1979 he was used at the world championship in San Diego in featherweight, but disappointed there when he lost after two wins against Abdurrahim Kuzu from the United States and István Tóth from Hungary . The international championships of 1980, including the Olympic Games in Moscow , therefore took place without Farchat. Nevertheless he tried to get international honors in 1981. He started at the European Championships in Gothenburg , won five fights there and came in 3rd place after a loss to Ryszard Swierad from Poland.

After that he was no longer used in any other international championships.

Alija Mustafina , a daughter of Mustafin, is a successful gymnast . Among other things, she was Olympic champion on uneven bars in London in 2012.
