István Tóth

István Tóth (born October 3, 1951 in Szolnok ) is a former Hungarian wrestler . He was a silver medalist at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and world champion in 1979 and 1981 in the Greco-Roman style featherweight.

Career

István Tóth began wrestling as a teenager. He belonged to the Egri Vasas Birkózó club (Vasas Eger wrestling club ). István Tóth got in the Hungarian national wrestling team, in which he was accepted in 1975, by national coach Csaba Hegedűs the finishing touches to a world class wrestler. Tóth, who wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style, was Hungarian champion for the first time in 1973 in the featherweight division. Until his first appearance at an international championship he had to wait until 1976 because the Hungarian Wrestling Association preferred László Réczi , who was very successful on the international wrestling mat. At the European Championships in 1976 in Leningrad , Tóth won only one fight in featherweight and had to be satisfied with 9th place.

His next assignment took place at the 1978 European Championships in Oslo . This time Tóth showed very good fights and won the bronze medal with four wins. He also won over the highly favored Kazimierz Lipień from Poland . Lipień was nevertheless European champion because Tóth lost to the Romanian Ion Păun .

1979 Tóth became vice European champion in Bucharest after a final defeat against Stylianos Migiakis from Greece . The world championship of the same year was even more successful for him, as he became world champion with five wins.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Tóth u. a. Victories over the world class athletes Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and Boris Kramarenko from the USSR . In the fight for the gold medal he was again defeated by his feared opponent Stylianos Migiakis. In this fight, both wrestlers were about to be disqualified with two warnings each for passivity. The judges then decided a few seconds before the end of the fight to give Tóth the third warning, which cost him the Olympic victory. A very tough decision for István Tóth.

In 1981 Tóth, who had overcome the disappointment of Moscow, became world featherweight champion for the second time. In the final he defeated Poland Ryszard Swierad with 7: 6 points. In 1982 Tóth then won his last medal at the European Championships in Varna with 3rd place in the featherweight division.

In 1984 he started without success at the European Championships in Jönköping , but then withdrew from international competition, especially since Hungary had joined the Eastern Bloc states' Olympic boycott in Los Angeles .
