Stylianos Migiakis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stylianos "Stelios" Migiakis ( Greek Στυλιανός "Στέλιος" Μηγιάκης , * 5. May 1952 ) is a retired Greek wrestler and Olympic champion in 1980 in Roman Greek style in the featherweight .

Career

Stylianos Migiakis was born on the island of Crete . He started wrestling there in 1968 and over the years developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. To get ahead faster, he went to Athens , where he worked as a bank clerk.

1971 Stylianos was first Greek featherweight champion and in the same year for the first time at an international championship, the World Cup in Sofia , used. There Stylianos, who was only 19 years old, still had to pay a lot of money, because he prematurely lost both fights that he had to contest. At the European Championships in 1972 in Katowice , Stylianos achieved three wins and achieved a good 6th place. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Stylianos again achieved three wins, including one over the Soviet favorite Jemal Megrelishvili , which brought him to 7th place.

In the following six years until 1978, Stylianos competed in almost every European and World Cup. But he never succeeded in winning a medal. His best placings were 4th place at the 1974 World Cup in Katowice , 5th place at the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City and 6th place at the 1975 European Championships in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , both in the featherweight category. At all international championships of these years it was shown that Stylianos could keep up well against the mass of starters, but had no chance against the absolute top athletes, who at that time came almost without exception from the former Eastern Bloc countries. Georgi Markow from Bulgaria , Kazimierz Lipień from Poland , Nelson Dawidjan , Boris Kramarenko from the USSR and László Réczi from Hungary are examples.

In 1979, however, Stylianos made the breakthrough, surprisingly for some. At the European Championships this year in Bucharest he was defeated again in the 2nd round against the Soviet wrestler Boris Kramarenko, but thanks to a bye and three wins over high-class opponents such as the Turks Metin Eser, the Poles Kazimierz Lipień and the Hungarians István Tóth and the The fact that Kramarenko lost again to Toth made him the European champion.

However, the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow were to be the climax of Stylianos Migiakis' career . He won u. a. again over Kazimierz Lipien, Boris Kramarenko and István Tóth and became Olympic champion despite a double defeat against Lars Malmkvist from Sweden .

Thereafter, Stylianos, who was also eight times Greek featherweight champion in his career, ended his career as an active wrestler.
