Helmut Westphal

Helmut Westphal (* 1928 ; † October 23, 2010 ) was a German sports historian and university professor .

Life

Westphal studied at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig . His habilitation was accepted in 1963 at the Pädagogische Hochschule Potsdam , the title work was “The politics of the ruling classes for the militarization of German physical culture in West Germany”. Westphal was a professor for theory of physical culture and sports history at the Potsdam University of Education until 1988.

Westphal dealt with the Olympic Games from a sports history and sports policy perspective, cultural theoretical positions on physical culture and sport, the concept of a socialist physical culture and the role of sport in the development of socialism in the German Democratic Republic.
