The Teufelssee is a body of water west of Bad Freienwalde in the Märkisch-Oderland district in the state of Brandenburg .

geography

The lake is located in the greater Märkische Schweiz area between federal highway 167 in the north and federal highway 158 in the south. To the east is the city center of Bad Freienwalde.

The only inlet, the Hammerfließ, is not officially dedicated and has its source in the western Ahrend throat. From there the inlet runs over a length of around 630 m into a first, smaller area of the lake. To the east lies the much larger area, in which the only drain into the Hammerthal lies in the east. In this larger area is a small, nameless island in the western part.

history

In the 19th century the lake was still called the Black Pond . The exact circumstances of the name change are not known. However, a wooden bridge, the Devil's Bridge, spanned the lake near the drain. The city of Freienwalde therefore suspects that the name of the bridge could have been carried over to the lake. From the point of view of the city, however, it is also conceivable that leaking cold spring water represented a danger for swimmers and therefore gave the lake its name.

Workers alums from the plant to the north transported the ore over the Teufelsbrücke to the workshops in Hammerthal for processing. The lake was much smaller at that time and served as a mill pond for the nearby Oberkietzmühle. After the alum plant was closed in 1860, the pit was used for clay extraction until the last brickworks closed in 2009.

ecology

Carp , perch , pike , tench , roach and rudd live in the lake, as well as beavers in the water and on the banks . He immigrated from the Oderbruch over the Hammerfliess to the Ahrendskehle.
