Ivan Frgić
Ivan Frgić (born July 18, 1953 in Sombor ; † October 31, 2015 ) was a Yugoslav wrestler . He was a silver medalist at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight.
Career
Ivan Frgić, a blond Croat , began as a teenager in his hometown of Sombor in Vojvodina with the rings . From 1968 to 1972 he was a member of the sports club " Lika " Zagreb and from 1973 to 1980 of " Elektrovojvodina " Sombor. There, as well as in the Yugoslav national team, he was led by the coaches Ivan Cucic and Svetomir Damjanović in the world class in the Greco-Roman style. For the first time Frgić was Yugoslav bantamweight champion in 1971. He celebrated his first success on the international wrestling mat as early as 1970 in Huskvarna, Swedenwhen he became vice European junior champion in the class up to 56 kg body weight. He celebrated his first big success with the seniors in 1973 with the 3rd place at the European Championships in Helsinki . From this point on, Frgić started regularly at the international championships and celebrated great successes.
In 1974 he won the bronze medal at the bantamweight championship in Katowice . He lost against Józef Lipień from Poland and Farchat Mustafin from the Soviet Union , who were also among his main competitors in the next few years. At the European Championships in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , Frgić achieved one of his greatest successes. He became European champion with seven wins and only one missing point. In the decisive battles he defeated Bernd Drechsel from the GDR and Farchat Mustafin. At the 1975 World Cup, he no longer had this fantastic form, because he lost to Józef Lipień and Farchat Mustafin and had to be content with 6th place.
In 1976 he drove to the Olympic Games in Montreal with high hopes . In the bantamweight he succeeded in a preliminary round fight a renewed victory over Farchat Mustafin. Despite a surprising loss to Hungary's József Doncsecz , Frgić made it to the final against Pertti Ukkola from Finland , to whom he lost just on points. By winning the silver medal , however, he had met all expectations.
In 1977 Frgić again took an excellent 3rd place at the World Championships in Gothenburg . He suffered defeats against Farchat Mustafin and Pertti Ukkola . At the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City , Frgić and his opponent József Doncsecz were taken off the mat in the first round because of passivity and were charged with 4 missing points. Nevertheless, he fought his way to the final against the Soviet wrestler Schamil Serikow , to whom he was defeated and became vice world champion, with victories over Józef Lipień from Poland, Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and the German young talent Pasquale Passarelli .
In the following years Ivan Frgić wrestled in featherweight, as he could not make the weight for the bantamweight anymore. In the featherweight class, however, he won no more medals at the international championships. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he still came in 4th place.
After the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Ivan Frgić ended his international wrestling career. He trained as a sports teacher at the Sports University in Novi Sad and works as a wrestling trainer.
