Benni Ljungbeck

Benni Ingemar Ljungbeck (born July 20, 1958 in Hässleholm ) is a former Swedish wrestler and current coach. He won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style in the bantamweight at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow .

Career

Ljungbeck began wrestling as a teenager in Klippan . He concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style. His coach at the wrestling club (Brottning Klub) BK Klippan was the Finn Leo Honkala . Benni Ljungbeck began his international wrestling career at the age of sixteen. He finished in 1974 at the junior European championship in Haparanda in paper weight 5th place and in the senior Nordic champion in paper weight before the Finn Hirvonen and the Norwegian Stöwe.

At the Junior World Championships in 1975 in Haskovo , he came in flyweight on the 4th place. He took the same place at the 1977 Junior World Championship in Las Vegas . At the European Junior Championships in Oulu in 1978 , he then won his first medal at an international championship in bantamweight with 2nd place.

From 1977 Benni Ljungbeck started regularly at the international senior championships. At several world and European championships from 1977 to 1979 he had to be content with middle places in bantamweight. His big breakthrough came in 1980. First, he at the European Championships this year in Prievidza Vice European champion bantamweight behind Mihai Boţilă from Romania , but he placed it against such world-class wrestlers like Pasquale Passarelli from the FRG and Vitaly Konstantinov from the Soviet Union . At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 1981 Benni Ljungbeck fought his way back to the final with four wins in bantamweight, in which he was defeated by the German Pasquale Passarelli. Since he had to accept a defeat against the Finn Ilpo Seppälä , it was only enough for him in this championship for 7th place.

In 1983 Benni Ljungbeck paused due to an injury and missed a medal at the 1984 European Championships in Jönköping in bantamweight with fourth place. At this championship he won in his first fight against Pasquale Passarelli , but retired after defeats to Frank Wohlgemuth from the GDR and Petar Balow from Bulgaria before reaching the final. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles he won over Antonio Caltabiano from Italy , Ilpo Seppälä and Ronny Sidge from Norway and lost to Haralambos Holidis from Greece and Masaki Eto from Japan . In the fight for 5th place he could no longer compete against the American Frank Fambiano. He did not meet the Olympic champion Pasquale Passarelli.

More medals won Ljungbeck at the European Championships 1985 in Leipzig , where he bantamweight behind Oganes Arutjunjan from the USSR and Nicolae Zamfir of Romania finished 3rd and at the European Championships in 1986 in Athens , where he featherweight behind Hungary Árpád Sipos Vice- European champion was.

His last start in an international championship he completed in 1987 in the featherweight division at the World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand. He dropped out here early and only reached 13th place.
