Árpád Sipos (born October 23, 1961 ) is a former Hungarian wrestler . He was the 1986 European Champion in the Greco-Roman style featherweight.

Career

Árpád Sipos grew up in Budapest and started wrestling there as a teenager in 1967. He was already very successful in the junior division and was therefore delegated to the Honved Budapest Sports Club , where there was a wrestling performance center. His coach there was the former world champion János Varga . Árpád Sipos fully focused on the Greco-Roman style. At a height of 1.68 meters, he wrestled during his career in bantam or featherweight (at that time up to 57 kg or 62 kg body weight).

In 1980 he was used for the first time at an international championship. He started at the European Senior Championships in Prievidza and came there in bantamweight a. a. behind such experts as Witali Konstantinow , Soviet Union , Benni Ljungbeck , Sweden and Pasquale Passarelli , FRG in 5th place. In the autumn of 1980 he started at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Bursa and won the European bantamweight title there. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he was not yet used.

In 1981 Árpád Sipos started at the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Vancouver , where he was also Junior World Champion ahead of the Soviet athlete Timerzjan Kalimulin , Emil Radew , Bulgaria and the great German talent Dieter Schwind . At the European Championships this year in Gothenburg he came in 4th place because he was beaten by Benni Ljungbeck and Piotr Michalik from Poland . He was unlucky at the 1981 World Cup in Oslo . He won there over Yuji Asa from Japan and Jozef Raczek from Poland, but injured himself in his fight against Haralambos Holidis from Greece and could no longer wrestle.

In 1982 Árpád Sipos was not used at the international championships and at the European championship in 1983 in Budapest he just missed the medal ranks with a 4th place. In the battle for the bronze medal he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Vasily Fomin on points. Even at the 1983 World Cup in Kiev , he did not get into the medal ranks. But he won the fight for 5th place against Sekhet Karadag from Turkey .

In the Olympic year 1984 Árpád Sipos was absent from the European Championships in Jönköping due to an injury and at the Olympic Games of that year in Los Angeles he could not take part because of the boycott of these games by the socialist countries.

From 1985 Árpád Sipos started in featherweight. This was made possible because István Tóth , who had previously dominated this weight class in Hungary, ended his career at the end of 1984. At the 1985 European Championships in Leipzig, he won a medal in this new weight class, the bronze one. He fought for this with a victory over the Romanian Gheorghe Savu . Against the same wrestler he was then defeated at the World Championships in Kolbotn near Oslo . It was again about the bronze medal. Therefore only the 4th place remained for Árpád Sipos.

In 1986 Árpád Sipos finally succeeded in Athens in featherweight the first title win at an international championship of the seniors. In the final for the pool he defeated the Soviet athlete Alexander Litwinow and in the fight for the EM gold medal Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden on points. At the World Championships this year in Budapest he had to make do with the thankless 4th place. In the fight for the world championship bronze medal he was defeated by the multiple world champion Schiwko Wangelow Atanassow from Bulgaria.

After this world championship, Árpád Sipos did not participate in any international championships, nothing is known about his further life.
