Zhivko Wangelow Atanassow ( Bulgarian Живко Вангелов Атанасов ; born  July 7, 1960 in Nova Sagora ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He won a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games and was also twice world and European champion in Greco-Roman style, each in featherweight .

Career

Schiwko Wangelow began wrestling in 1972 as a teenager in Chaskowo . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. During his military service he was a member of the Trakija Plovdiv sports club . After completing the same, he completed a sports degree at the National Sports Academy "Wasil Levski" in Sofia and became a member of the Levski-Spartak Sofia sports club . There he was trained by none other than the multiple world champion Alexandar Tomow .

His international wrestling career began in 1981 with the participation in the Junior World Championship (age group Espoirs) in Vancouver. He took 3rd place in featherweight behind Anatoli Tainkin, Soviet Union, and Bernd Gabriel , Germany. In 1982 he was also at the start of the German Grand Prix in Freiburg, where he won ahead of Piotr Michalik , Poland, Anatoli Tainkin and Bernd Gabriel.

In 1983 he was the first Bulgarian featherweight champion. In April of this year he was then used at the European Championships in Budapest and won the featherweight title there in front of Constantin Uță , Romania, Alexander Litwinow , Soviet Union, and Günter Reichelt , GDR, the title. At this year's World Championships in Kiev he won a bronze medal behind Hannu Lahtinen , Finland, and Günter Reichelt.

Things went less well for him at the European Championships in Jönköping in 1984, because he only finished 5th there behind Kamandar Madschidow , Soviet Union, Günter Reichelt, Constantin Uță and Bogusław Klozik , Poland. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he could not take part because of the boycott of these games by socialist states. In 1985 he only started at the World Championships in Kolbotn / Norway. He succeeded in becoming world champion for the first time. He referred Bogusław Klozik, Gheorghe Savu , Romania and Árpád Sipos , Hungary, to the places.

Also in 1986 Schiwko Wangelow was only at the start at the World Championships. In Budapest he could not defend his title. But he won a bronze medal behind Kamandar Madschidow and Bogusław Klozik. The most successful year in his career was 1987. He was first European champion in Tampere ahead of Wassili Woschni, Soviet Union and Jenő Bódi , Hungary and then in August 1987 in Clermont-Ferrand again world champion in front of Kamandar Madschidow, Shigeki Nishiguchi, Japan and Bogusław Klozik.

In 1988 he faced his old rival Kamandar Madschidow in the final of the featherweight at the Olympic Games in Seoul. He lost this fight but on points and received the silver medal.

Then Shivko Wangelow ended his active wrestling career. Since the political change in Bulgaria in the 1990s, he has been a self-employed businessman and at times also held some offices in the Bulgarian Wrestling Association.
