Career

Reichelt grew up in Limbach-Oberfrohna near Chemnitz and began wrestling with Heinz Bohne as a teenager. In 1974, because of his talent, he was delegated to ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt, where coach Werner Heppner led him to the top of the world's wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style. In 1976 he took 3rd place in featherweight at the Junior European Championships in Poznan and thus made a lasting impression on himself for the first time. He won his first GDR senior title in 1979.

In 1981 he was used for the first time at an international championship in the senior sector. At the European Championships in Gothenburg he came in 8th place with a victory over Thomas Passarelli from the Federal Republic of Germany . His next missions followed in 1983. First he finished 4th at the European Featherweight Championships in Budapest and in the autumn of this year he achieved the greatest success of his career at the World Championships in Kiev with 2nd place in the featherweight division. In 1984 he came in second at the European Championships in Jönköping . In the final he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Kamandar Madschidow . In the same year he was unable to participate in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles due to the boycott by the GDR .

After a 5th place at the European featherweight championship in 1985 in Leipzig , Reichelt ended his international wrestling career. He took a job as a junior coach at his parent club, the ASK "Vorwärts" Frankfurt (Oder) and after 1988 became head coach of this club, responsible for the classic wrestlers. He led Maik Bullmann to Olympic victory and multiple winners at world championships. From 1981 to 1987 he had completed a sports degree at DHfK Leipzig, which he had completed as a qualified sports pedagogue.

After German reunification, Reichelt became national coach with the German Wrestling Association. From 1991 to 2003 he was responsible for the junior division before taking over the senior division in 2003. He left this office at the end of 2006.
