Vakhtang Blagidze

Wachtang Blagidze ( Georgian ვახტანგ ბლაგიძე ; born July 23, 1954 in Tschotschchati near Lantschchuti , Gurien ) is a former Soviet wrestler . He was Olympic champion in Moscow in 1980 and multiple world and European champion in wrestling in Greco-Roman style in flyweight.

Career

Vakhtang Blagidze comes from Georgia . He started wrestling as a teenager and was delegated to the Tbilisi Wrestling Center after his first major successes in the youth field . In 1977, when he was only 20 years old, he won the Soviet flyweight championship. Since then he has been part of the Soviet national team of wrestlers in Greco-Roman. Style.

In 1978 Wachtang was also used for the first time at an international championship, the European championship in Oslo . There he won the European Championship in a superior style with six wins. Among the wrestlers he defeated were u. a. Rolf Krauß from Ludwigshafen am Rhein as well as Lajos Rácz from Hungary and Nicu Gângă from Romania . At the national level, Wachtang had to find out in 1978 and 1979 that it was easier to become world champion than to place in the front field at the Soviet championships. He did not succeed in both years to place among the top three winners of this championship. The consequence of this was that he was not used in 1979 at any international championships.

In 1980 he dominated the Soviet championship again. He then went to the European Championship, which took place in Prievidza , to the start and won the European Championship again with six wins.
