Career
Shamil Serikow, a Kazakh, began as a teenager with rings . He became a member of Dinamo Alma-Ata , today's Almaty . In this sports association, which brought together the best wrestlers in South Kazakhstan during the Soviet Union , he soon developed into a world-class wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. He was trained by A. Scharkow.
He made his breakthrough into the absolute top class of the Soviet Union in 1978 when he was the Soviet bantamweight champion in front of Vasily Karatajew a. Vitaly Konstantinov became. He was therefore sent to the World Cup in Mexico City in the same year . Shamil was able to fully convince there and become world champion with seven wins . In the finals he defeated Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and Pasquale Passarelli from the Federal Republic of Germany .
1979 was also extremely successful for Shamil. First he was European bantamweight champion in Bucharest ahead of Pasquale Passarelli and then he successfully defended the 1978 world championship title in San Diego in the fall . Again it was Pasquale Passarelli who had to bow to Shamil in the final battle.
Shamil Serikov then celebrated his fourth victory in a row at a major international championship at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . As a result of the Olympic boycott by the federal government, Pasquale Passarelli could not start there. Shamil fought six wins and the gold medal in the final against Józef Lipień from Poland .
For the last time Schamil was at the European championship 1981 in Gothenburg at an international championship at the start. He was no longer in the form from 1978 to 1980, lost to Piotr Michalik from Poland and Pasquale Passarelli and had to be content with 5th place. At the Soviet championship that year he only finished 9th. From 1982 he was no longer part of the Soviet national team.
He was therefore no longer used in any international championships, but was still a trainer in the youth field for a few years. Shamil Serikov died in 1989 at the age of only 33. In September 2013 he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for his services to wrestling .
