Imre Hódos

Imre Hódos (born January 10, 1928 in Hajdúnánás , † April 24, 1989 in Debrecen ) was a Hungarian wrestler and Olympic champion in Helsinki in 1952 .

Career

Imre Hodos grew up in Debrecen and began in 1946 with "Debreceni Vasutas Sports Club" (DVSC) to the rings . In 1953 he moved to the large club “Vörös Lobogo” Budapest , to which he belonged until he retired in 1962. Imre wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style, joined the Hungarian national team in 1950 and received excellent training from the Hungarian national coaches Lajos Keresztes and Mihály Matura .

In 1951 he took second place behind the top Soviet wrestler Artem Terjan at the World Youth Festival in Berlin (East) and attracted attention for the first time on the international wrestling mat.

At the Olympic Games in Helsinki he played his first international bantamweight championship and won the gold medal with four wins , although he was defeated again on points against Artem Terjan. He was also defeated by his feared opponent Artem Terjan at the 1953 World Cup in Naples and was runner-up behind this world champion.

He was unable to take part in the 1955 World Cup in Karlsruhe due to an injury. But he was back at the Olympic Games in Melbourne . There he got four victories. In his fifth fight he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Konstantin Vyrupajew by just a few points and had to be satisfied with 4th place.

In the 1958 World Cup at home in Budapest had Imre pronounced pitch as he in his second fight against Soviet athlete Oleg Karavayev injured and had to retire. 1960 Imre took part in Rome for the third time in the Olympic Games. The now 32-year-old athlete only won one fight there and only came in 11th.

In 1962, Imre Hódos ended his wrestling career and then worked for many years as a coach at "MAV" Debrecen.
