Francisc Horvath , actually Ferenc Horváth (born October 19, 1928 in Lugoj ) is a former Romanian wrestler and bronze medalist at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne in Greco-Roman bantamweight style .

Career

Francisc Horvath began as a teenager in Bucharest with the rings . As a member of the Romanian security organs, he was a member of the sports club Dinamo Bucharest and was the first Romanian wrestler who, after 1945, entered the international top class in Greco-Roman. Style could advance. Francisc began his international career with a 3rd place at the communist-controlled World Festival of Youth in East Berlin in the bantamweight category behind the later world champion Artem Terjan from the Soviet Union and the later Olympic champion Imre Hódos from Hungary .

He was also used at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , but did not get there after two defeats beyond a 12th place. Even at the 1953 World Cup in Naples it was only enough for him to finish 11th. Much better he did at the 1955 World Championships in Karlsruhe , where he finished 6th in featherweight with three wins and one loss to the Hungarian world champion Imre Polyák .

Francisc Horvath achieved the greatest success of his career at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne . In bantamweight he won the bronze medal with four wins . He succeeded in defeating the favorite Konstantin Vyrupajew from the Soviet Union. A defeat against Edvin Vesterby from Sweden prevented him from becoming Olympic champion. Since Wyrupajew again defeated Vesterby, he became Olympic champion before Vesterby and Horvath because of the best points ratio from the preliminary fights. The bronze medal won by Francisc Horvath was the first ever medal from a Romanian wrestler at the Olympic Games.

In 1958, Francisc Horvath ended his career as an active wrestler and became a coach in the Romanian Wrestling Association.
