Kurt Pettersén

Kurt Arne Pettersén (born June 21, 1916 in Borås , † November 15, 1957 ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was an Olympic champion in the 1948 Greco-Roman style bantamweight.

Career

Kurt Pettersén grew up in Borås and started wrestling as a teenager at Boras BK (BK = Brottning Klub). His coach in Borås was Erik Söderlund. In 1936 he was the first Swedish champion in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight, but was only a substitute in the Swedish team at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . After he had developed with the help of the national team coach Rudolf Svedberg and Robert Oksa, he was used in 1938 at the European Championships in the Greco-Roman style in Tallinn in bantamweight. In Tallinn he achieved three victories, including one over the German Ferdinand Schmitz . In the final battle, however, he was defeated by Väinö Perttunen from Finland and became vice- European champion .

Kurt Pettersén also won three bantamweight victories at the European Championships in Oslo in 1939 in the Greco-Roman style. He defeated Ivar Stokke from Norway , Martin Maiste from Estonia and Georg Pulheim from Germany. He lost the final fight again against a Finnish wrestler, Kauko Kiiseli . This was the second time that he became vice European champion.

After this championship Pettersén had to take a break until 1946 on the international wrestling mat because of the Second World War . In 1946, the European Free Style Championships were held in Stockholm for the first time. In Stockholm it came to the constellation that Lajos Bencze (Biringer) from Hungary , Nasuh Akar from Turkey , Erkki Johansson from Finland and Kurt Pettersen defeated each other. Kurt Pettersén had the worst end, because he ended up in 4th place in the final bill and even missed a medal.

Kurt Pettersén achieved his great triumph at the 1948 Olympic Games in London . In the Greco-Roman style, bantamweight, he surprisingly lost his first fight against Raidar Maerlie from Norway. Maerlie was eliminated after two defeats in the 2nd and 3rd round, while Kurt Pettersén won the gold medal with victories over Francesco Suppo from Italy , Lajos Bencze, Mahmud Hassan Ali from Egypt and Taisto Lempinen from Finland .

Although he was already 32 years old, Kurt Pettersén continued his wrestling career. In 1949 he fought for the silver medal again in the bantamweight division at the European Free Style Championships in Istanbul . He was defeated by the Turkish local hero Nasuh Akar in the final battle .

In 1950, for the first time after 1922 , World Wrestling Championships (Greco-Roman style) took place in Stockholm . Kurt Pettersén wanted to end his career with a success. But he didn't succeed, because after victories over Raidar Maerlie and Lajos Bencze he lost to Mahmud Hassan Ali and only finished 4th in the bantamweight division. He then ended his international wrestling career.
