José Gregorio Salazar Lara

José Gregorio Salazar (* 1773 in San Salvador , † February 1, 1838 in Guatemala City ) was a liberal politician in Central America. He was acting President of the Central American Confederation from September 16, 1834 to February 14, 1835, between the two terms of office of José Francisco Morazán Quezada . In 1838 he was murdered by a mob who supported the rebel groups led by General José Rafael Carrera Turcios .

Salazar's parents were Gregorio Salazar and Francisca Lara Mogrovejo. He married Francisca Castro y Lara. Her son, General Carlos Salazar Castro , served briefly as the interim President of El Salvador State, from June 23 to July 13, 1834.

Political offices

He held various offices in Central America including Guatemala City Councilor and Mayor in 1825; political head of the department of Guatemala (1825) and Quetzaltenango (1830); Commander of the Escuadrón Sedentario of Guatemala City (1831); and Vice President of Guatemala (1834 and 1838).

In 1834 he was Vice President of the Central American Confederation when President Morazán temporarily left office to fight the rebels. He served as acting president from September 16, 1834 to February 14, 1835, when Morazán returned to office.

Political crisis in El Salvador

On June 23, 1834, his son, Carlos Salazar Castro , a supporter of General Morazán, overthrew the Conservative President of the State of El Salvador, Joaquín de San Martín y Ulloa , and took power as Supremo Jefe of the state. On July 13, 1834, the federal government, in the hands of the Liberals, took direct control of El Salvador. José Gregorio Salazar (the father) ruled the state as Supremo Jefe from then until September 30, 1834.

On September 21, 1834, the parliament of the province of El Salvador met in Ciudad San Vicente and elected José María Silva , from the Partido Liberal, to the Jefe Supremo . The election was later canceled. On September 30th, Joaquín Escolán y Balibrera was elected Supremo Jefe of the province of El Salvador and held this office until October 14th, after which Silva held this office until April 10th, 1835.

On February 1, 1838, José Rafael Carrera Turcios had Guatemala City occupied by indigenous people from Mataquescuintla. Salazar was Deputy Jefe Supremo of the Central American Confederation at the time. Salazar and his family fled to the home of a friend, Doctor Quirino Flores. Salazar was killed while trying to defend his family with a child in his arms.
