Artyom Sarkissowitsch Terjan (born March 5, 1930 in Kirowabad , Azerbaijani SSR , † April 1970 in Baku ) was a Soviet wrestler . He was world champion in 1953 and Olympic bronze medalist in 1952.

Career

Artyom Terjan, an Armenian from Kirovabad , began as a teenager with rings . By the age of 20 he developed into a world class wrestler in both styles, specializing in the Greco-Roman style at international championships. In 1950 he was the first Soviet master in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight. He repeated this success in 1951, when he won in front of the Moscow Lenz and Vladimir Stashkewitsch from Rostov-on-Don . In the same year he also became the Soviet bantamweight free style champion.

Artjom began his international career at the World Youth Festival in Berlin (East). He won at this event, which was seen as the opposite of the socialist states to the Olympic Games, in the Greco-Roman style in the bantamweight before Imre Hódos from Hungary .

1952 Artyom was again Soviet master in the Greco-Roman style before Telkow, Moscow and Roman Dsneladze , Tbilisi , but in the featherweight. At the Olympic Games of the same year in Helsinki , the first Olympic Games in which the Soviet Union took part, Artem won the bronze medal with six bantamweight victories. In the fight for the gold medal, Artjom Terjan, Zakaria Chihab from Lebanon and Imre Hódos from Hungary defeated each other, so the points from the preliminary fights had to decide. Artjom had the bad luck that in the six fights he won five points were won, which meant he was awarded a missing point. Chihab and Hódos were fortunate enough to each receive a bye, which means they only got four missing points with four point wins each and were ahead of Artyom. Artjom, who had one more victory than Chihab and Hódos, was actually “punished” for this victory with a bronze medal, while Hódos won gold and Chihab silver.

1953 Artyom Terjan then succeeded in winning the world championship in Naples in the Greco-Roman style in the bantamweight division. This time he remained undefeated in five fights and relegated Imre Hódos to 2nd place.

At the 1955 World Cup in the Greco-Roman style in Karlsruhe , Artyom was used in featherweight. He first defeated Roger Bielle from France and Joseph Mewis from Belgium on points, but was then surprisingly defeated in his third fight against the Italian Umberto Trippa and had to retire.

After that Artjom Terjan came to no more assignments at international championships.
