Umberto Trippa began as a teenager with rings . He specialized in the Greco-Roman. Style. In 1952 he was the first Italian featherweight champion and then represented his country at the Summer Olympics in Helsinki . With three wins and one defeat, he finished 4th and just barely missed the bronze medal.
At the 1953 World Cup in their own country, Trippa was runner-up in Naples . He defeated four wrestlers, including the strong Hungarian Imre Polyák and only suffered a defeat from the old warrior Olle Anderberg from Sweden .
Trippa also delivered good fights at the World Cup in Karlsruhe in 1955 . He defeated the high favorite there in the first round, the Soviet athlete Artem Terjan, and after defeats to Roger Bielle from France and Gunnar Hakansson from Sweden in the fourth and fifth round, he finished fifth.
1956 Trippa took part in Melbourne for the second time in the Olympic Games. He won over the Romanian Ion Popescu , but was eliminated after defeat against Polyák u. Roman Dzneladze from the Soviet Union and came in 6th place.
In 1960 Trippa competed in Rome for the third time at the Olympic Games. And again he just missed a medal with 4th place.
