Mihály Matura

Mihály Matura (* 8. April 1900 in Budapest , † 7. June 1975 ) was a Hungarian wrestler and two-time medalist at the European Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling in lightweight .

Career

Mihály Matura grew up in Budapest where she started at a young age to the rings . He became a member of Vasas Budapest. In 1924 he was the first Hungarian lightweight champion in the Greco-Roman style, which he wrestled exclusively. He was then sent to the Olympic Games in Paris . There he won three fights and after two defeats in the 4th and 5th round against the Estonian Albert Kusnets and the later Olympic champion Oskari Friman from Finland reached the 6th place.

At the European Championships in Milan in 1925 , he won again three times, then after defeats against Oskari Friman and his compatriot Lajos Keresztes to win the bronze medal in the lightweight. He did the same at the European Championships in 1926 in Riga, Latvia . He won there u. a. against the strong wrestlers Osvald Käpp from Estonia and František Kratochvíl from Czechoslovakia .

In the following years Mihály Matura could not qualify for international championships against Lajos Keresztes and Károly Kárpáti in Hungary . This he succeeded again only in 1934. He started this year at the European Championships in Rome in the welterweight division . After a victory he was defeated there against the Italian Ercole Gallegati and the new German wrestler hope Fritz Schäfer .

After this European Championship, Mihály devoted himself primarily to the coaching office. He became one of the most prominent Hungarian coaches well into the 1960s. Mihály Matura played a key role in the preparation of countless successes that Hungarian wrestlers achieved in those years. In addition, he was also active as a functionary. For many years he was President of the Hungarian Wrestling Federation and in 1956 he became one of the deputies of the President of the World Wrestling Federation ( FILA ) .
