Józef Lipień

Józef Lipień (born February 6, 1949 in Jaczkow , Lower Silesian Voivodeship ) is a former Polish wrestler . He became world champion in 1973 in Tehran and won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow .

Career

Józef Lipień started wrestling with his twin brother Kazimierz Lipień at the MKS Jelena Gora sports club in 1963 . His first coach there was Janusz Jasczuk. He concentrated entirely on the Greco-Roman style. After initial successes in the junior area and because of their obvious talent, both brothers were delegated to the Polish top club Wisloki Dębica in 1967 , where a wrestling center existed. There Tadeusz Popiolek and Czeslaw Korzen were their coaches. Later, in the Polish national wrestling team, in which both wrestlers were accepted in 1968, Janusz Tracewski was added as a coach. In Debica, Józef and Kazimierz Lipień could fully concentrate on the wrestling.

Already in 1968 Józef Lipień was used for the first time in an international championship, the European championship in Västerås . At the age of 19 he still had to pay a lot of money there, because he lost to the former German world champion Fritz Stange from Untertürkheim and to the Finn Risto Björlin and only achieved 14th place. Nevertheless, he was sent to Mexico City for the Olympic Games that year , but also retired from Turkey early after defeats against Risto Björlin and Kaya Öztürk and only reached 17th place.

In 1969 Józef Lipień was the first Polish bantamweight champion. He was not used this year in any international championships. From 1970 he was there again, but could not achieve a top place at the European Championships that year in Berlin (East), nor at the World Championships in Edmonton . Even at the World Cup in 1971 in Sofia , he only reached 17th place. Slight progress was seen in 1972. He came in 8th place at the European Championships in Katowice in bantamweight and defeated his feared opponent Risto Björlin for the first time. Also at the Olympic Games in Munich he came in 8th place, where he was beaten by Christo Traikow from Bulgaria and Rustem Kazakow from the Soviet Union after two victorious fights .

Józef Lipień's big breakthrough to the top of the world came in 1973. At the European Championships that year in Helsinki , he won two fights before losing to Pertti Ukkola from Finland and Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and coming in 6th place. At the 1973 World Cup in Tehran , he defeated Christo Traikow and Rustem Kasakow, among others, and fought against Ivan Frgić in a draw, and although he lost to the Swede Per Lindholm in the preliminary round , he became world bantamweight champion in Tehran because Lindholm did not reach the finals .

At the 1974 World Cup in Katowice he almost managed to defend his title. He remained undefeated there in six fights, defeated u. a. Per Lindholm, the strong Stefan Krasimir from Bulgaria, the silver medal winner from the Olympic Games 1972 Hans-Jürgen Veil from Schifferstadt and Ivan Frgić and fought a draw in his last fight against Farchat Mustafin from the USSR. Mustafin then became world champion because he had one less missing point from the preliminary fights than Józef Lipień, who was vice-world champion.

Józef Lipień was also runner-up at the 1975 World Cup in Minsk . He won there over Bernd Drechsel from the GDR , Ivan Frgić, Hans-Jürgen Veil, Per Lindholm u. Pertti Ukkola, before losing to Farchat Mustafin on points this time.

Józef Lipień failed to win a medal when he took part in his third Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 . He won there again against Pertti Ukkola , but was defeated by the Romanian Mihai Boțilă and again Farchat Mustafin and ended up on the 10th place, which was disappointing for him.

In 1977 Józef Lipień paused, but started again in 1978 at the European Championships in Oslo , where he won a bronze bantamweight medal with five wins and losses against Mihai Boțilă and Wladimir Pogudin from the Soviet Union. On the other hand, he did not win a medal at this year's World Cup in Mexico City , although he was there a. a. against Mihai Boțilă and the Bulgarians Assen Milew won because he was defeated by Ivan Frgić and Shamil Serikow from the USSR. It landed in 6th place in Mexico City.

In 1979 Józef Lipień started studying sports at the Warsaw Sports University with the aim of becoming a wrestler trainer. In 1980 he managed to qualify again for participation in the Olympic Games in Moscow. To be able to start there in bantamweight he had to train a total of 11.5 kg. A rapid cure, which he successfully survived, because in Moscow he was in excellent shape, defeated a. a. Josef Krysta from the CSSR and Benni Ljungbeck from Sweden and reached the final fight against Shamil Serikow in which he was defeated by just a few points, but still won an Olympic medal with the silver medal.

After graduating from AWF Warszawa, Józef Lipień worked for several years as a wrestling trainer in Denmark ( Fredrikshavn ) and Sweden ( Hörby ) and after his return to Poland at Wisloki Debica.
