Ion Păun (born February 17, 1951 in Drăganu , Argeş County ) is a former Romanian wrestler . He was European Champion in 1977 in the Greco-Roman style featherweight.

Career

Ion Păun started wrestling at the age of twelve. After his first successes in the junior sector, he went to the police and was delegated to the Dinamo Bucharest sports club . As a Dinamo athlete, he had all the freedom to train in socialist Romania. Since 1970 he was a member of the Romanian national team of wrestlers. In 1971 he defeated in Bucharest in an international match Romania against the Federal Republic Emil Müller from Mainz on points and in 1972 he fought in three countries fighting in Germany three times against Helmut Westphal from Aalen . Each of the two wrestlers won once and a fight ended in a draw.

His first start at an international championship completed Ion Păun, who wrestled only in the Greco-Roman style, at the European Championships in 1972 in Katowice . He finished there in featherweight with three wins and one draw and one defeat against Kazimierz Lipień from Poland , with whom he should deliver many tough fights, the 5th place. He was also used at the Olympic Games in Munich , where he managed two wins and one draw against the silver medalist Heinz-Helmut Wehling . After a defeat against Hideo Fujimoto from Japan he was eliminated and came in 6th place.

1973 Ion Păun was the first Romanian featherweight champion and missed a medal at the world championship in Tehran in featherweight with a 4th place. After four victories he lost the decisive fights against Kazimierz Lipień and László Réczi from Hungary .

At the European Championships in Madrid in 1974 he came in 3rd place and won his first medal at an international championship. In a very difficult tournament he defeated the Olympic champion from 1972 Georgi Markow from Bulgaria and Kazimierz Lipień and fought against László Réczi in a draw. He suffered a defeat from Anatoly Kawkajew from the USSR. At the World Championships this year in Katowice he lost again to Kawkajew and also to Kazimierz Lipień and came in 8th place.

Also in 1975 Ion Păun achieved good results. Especially the 5th place at the world championship in Minsk deserves a mention. At the European Championships in 1976 in Leningrad , he defeated in featherweight a. a. the strong Soviet starter Suren Nalbandjan , but had to admit defeat to Kazimierz Lipień in the final. As runner-up European champion, he then took part in the Olympic Games for the second time in Montreal . With three wins and two defeats he improved his result compared to Munich, but with 5th place again missed the medal ranks.

In the following years he won four medals at international championships. He also defeated the German champion Thomas Passarelli several times , but he was defeated at the 1978 World Cup in Mexico City . In 1977 he celebrated the greatest success of his career, he became European featherweight champion in Bursa . In the final battles of this championship he defeated it Ryszard Swierad from Poland and was defeated by László Réczi, who in turn was beaten by Swierad. The best points ratio of these three wrestlers had Ion Păun, who thereby became European champion. In 1977 he finished 3rd in the featherweight division at the World Championships in Gothenburg , defeated by László Réczi and Kazimierz Lipień.

1978 Ion Păun was runner-up European champion in Oslo . With Boris Kramarenko from the USSR and István Tóth from Hungary he defeated two absolute top wrestlers. Kazimierz Lipień was once again better than him and won against him in the final battle. The last medal at an international championship then won Ion Păun with a 3rd place at the 1980 European Championships in Prievidza . In this championship, too, the first three winners defeated each other. Păun won against Nelson Dawidjan from the USSR, but lost to Ryszard Swierad , who in turn was defeated by Dawidjan. In the final round, Dawidjan won ahead of Swierad and Ion Păun.

At the end of his international wrestling career, Ion Păun started in Moscow for the third time at the Olympic Games in 1980. But he was not lucky here, because he was defeated there against Lars Malmkvist from Sweden and Ivan Frgić from Yugoslavia and only came in 9th place.

After the World Championships in Oslo in 1981 , where he only ended up in 13th place, he resigned from international wrestling, but was still active at the national level until 1984. His further life is unknown.
