Lars Malmkvist

Lars Ragnar Malmkvist (born September 24, 1955 in Lidköping ) is a former Swedish wrestler . He won a bronze medal in Greco-Roman style in featherweight at the World Championships in 1978 and 1979 .

Career

Lars Malmkvist started wrestling as a teenager in 1967. At that time he was a member of the wrestling club Kulladals BK Malmö . The 1.62 m tall athlete later moved to Lidköpings AS and was trained there by Börje Stath. He focused on the Greco-Roman style, in which handles are only allowed from the waist up.

Lars Malmkvist was already very successful as a junior and won the Swedish bantamweight championship in this age group in 1974 and 1975. In 1974 he was also at the junior European championships in Haparanda and won the silver medal in the bantamweight division behind the Soviet athlete Yuri Korchagin. He also won a medal at the Junior World Championships in Haskowo in 1975 . There he took 3rd place in the bantamweight category behind Juri Korchagin and the Bulgarian Assen Milew , but ahead of Josef Krysta from Czechoslovakia and the Italian Panelli.

In 1975 he started in Ludwigshafen am Rhein at the European Bantamweight Championship for seniors. After three victories, he was defeated by the Yugoslavs Ivan Frgić and Bernd Drechsel from the GDR and just barely missed a medal with 4th place.

In the following years, Lars Malmkvist then regularly represented the Swedish colors at the international championships. After a 7th place at the 1976 European Championships in Leningrad in bantamweight, here he lost a. a. the German champion Hans-Jürgen Veil , he started in the same year at the Olympic Games in Montreal , where he had already moved up to the featherweight division. In Montreal he won only his fight against the French Lionel Lacaze and finished 11th after defeats against Stylianos Migiakis from Greece and Ion Păun from Romania .

In 1977 he reached a good 5th place in featherweight at both the European Championships in Bursa and the World Championships in Gothenburg . He get thereby u. a. Victories over Stylianos Migiakis and Ilpo Seppälä from Finland . He suffered defeats from Nelson Dawidjan from the USSR , Ryszard Swierad from Poland , László Réczi from Hungary and Ion Păun, who were among his toughest rivals in the next few years.

In 1978 he won his first medal at the World Featherweight Championships in Mexico City . With three victories, he won the bronze medal there. Only Ivan Stajkow from Bulgaria and Kazimierz Lipień from Poland proved to be stronger than him . After a 5th place at the European Championships in Bucharest in 1979 , here he won a. a. over the strong Bulgarian Panayot Kirov , Lars Malmkvist won a bronze medal again at the 1979 Featherweight Championships in San Diego .

In 1980 Lars Malmkvist wasn't quite as successful anymore. He only won against Jean-Pierre Mercader from France at the European Championships this year in Prievidza and had to be content with 8th place after defeats against Stylianos Migiakis and Ivan Frgić. At the Olympic Games this year in Moscow he defeated Ion Păun, against whom he had always lost in international championships, but was then defeated in his next two fights against Kazimierz Lipień and again against Stylianos Migiakis and only reached 9th place.

After a disappointing 11th place at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 1981, where he lost his two fights against István Tóth from Hungary and Ryszard Swierad, he achieved a good 6 each at the European Championships in Varna and at the World Championships in Katowice in 1982 . Featherweight place.

In 1983 he was replaced in Sweden by Kent-Olle Johansson and was no longer used in any international championships. Meanwhile he became a businessman in the sporting goods industry.
