Lidköping is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götalands län and the historic province of Västergötland on the Kinneviken Bay of Sweden's largest inland lake, Vänern . The city is located at the mouth of the Lidan River into the lake and is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

history

Lidköping around 1700

When Lidköping was founded is unknown, but Lidköping received its first city privileges in 1446. Around this time inland navigation on the Vänern had gained in importance and the town of Lidköping became an important trading town, with grain and cattle from Skaraborg being traded for wood and iron ore from Bergslagen .

In 1670 Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie founded a new town on the western bank of the Lidan, just opposite the old town of Lidköping. Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie supported his new city, which was laid out according to a strictly geometrical floor plan, with all his strength, among other things he had a hunting lodge transported to the new city, which was to serve as the town hall. It was not until 1705 that the two cities were united.

In the first half of the 18th century, the city grew due to increasing trade. Then the further growth of the general development followed. In 1849 the city was partially destroyed in a large fire, but was able to recover. Lidköping developed into an important industrial city in the 20th century.

In 2015, the smaller, somewhat separate part of the village in a north-westerly direction on the banks of the Vänern was designated by Statistiska centralbyrån as an independent crime scene under the name Lidköping norra (“Lidköping North”). It includes the districts of Arvidstorp, Furuhäll, Stenhammar, Tofta and Ulriksdal.

Cityscape

Lidköping: Old Town Hall

Hardly anything has survived from the old, medieval town, as almost everything was destroyed in the great fire of 1849. A few houses have been preserved on Limtorget in the old part of the city, Gamla Staden, east of the Lidan river. The new city, founded in 1670, has a rectangular floor plan with an unusually large main square, the Nya Stadens Torg (German "Neustadtplatz"). The old town hall, a former hunting lodge, is located on this square. There are also numerous wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.

economy

Lidköping is an important industrial and port city.

With the purchase of the narrow-gauge Lidköping – Håkantorps Järnväg (HLJ) in 1902, the city became the operator of a railway, which initiated the establishment of Lidköping järnvägar in 1912 to manage other independent railway companies. In 1948, as part of the general nationalization of the railway , the shares in the companies were transferred to the state-owned railway company Statens Järnvägar .

Since 1911 there has been a porcelain factory in Lidköping, which used to belong to Rörstrand , which is now part of the Iittala company . It was closed in 2006. A museum shows the development of the Rörstrand porcelain factory. The Vänermuseum is located in Lidköping.

Lidköpings Mekaniska Verkstad (now KMT Precision Grinding ), founded in 1875, was based in Lidköping.

Lidköping can be reached via Lidköping-Hovby Airport .
