Arne Robertsson

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arne Alf Robert "Robban" Robertsson (born March 23, 1942 in Lidköping , † January 29, 1991 ibid) was a Swedish wrestler . He was a three-time Olympian and medalist at World and European Championships.

Career

Robertsson started wrestling at Lidköpings AS (Atletsällskap) as a teenager . He remained loyal to this club throughout his career. He was a blond giant who grew up into a full-blown heavyweight and started in both styles, the Greco-Roman and the freestyle.

In 1964 Arne Robertsson was the first Swedish freestyle champion. In 1966 he even won this title in both styles. In the course of his long career he was a total of 21 Swedish champions. He won 10 titles in Greco-Roman style and 11 in freestyle. His main competitors in those years in Sweden were Ragnar Svensson and Lennart Persson . Since Ragnar Svensson dominated the scene in Sweden in the Greco-Roman style, Arne Robertsson's international career began in freestyle.

He took 11th place at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 in the heavyweight division after a draw against Masanori Saito from Japan and defeats to ex-world champion Hamit Kaplan from Turkey and the 1960 Olympic champion Wilfried Dietrich from the Federal Republic of Germany . It can also be noted that Arne Robertsson was not exactly lucky in this competition.

At the European Championships in Karlsruhe in 1966 , his next start in an international championship, Arne Robertsson finished 7th in the heavyweight division with a draw against Bohumil Kubát from Czechoslovakia and a loss to Alexander Medvedev from the Soviet Union . At the European Championships in 1967 in Istanbul, he cut roughly the same as at the European Championships in 1966. He finished 6th in freestyle. He lost after a draw against the Hungarian László Nyers again against Wilfried Dietrich and had to admit defeat to the Czech Bohumil Kubát.

In 1968 Arne Robertsson started at the European Freestyle Championships in Skopje . He fought three draws there, against Peter Germer from the GDR , against Bohumil Kubát and against Roland Bock from the FRG. But he had scored more than 6 fault points and, although he was unbeaten, had to retire after the 3rd round. He only finished 9th. He started again in 1968 at the Olympic Games and finished 10th in Mexico City in freestyle after defeats to Abulfazil Anvari from Iran and Larry Kristoff from the United States.

In 1969 he won his first medal at an international championship. He came in 2nd place at the European Championships in Modena , where he started in the Greco-Roman style. He achieved this result with victories over Walter Kleemann from Denmark , Josef Schummer from Luxembourg and Giuseppe Marcucci from Italy . In the final fight against Omar Topuz from Turkey he had to accept a point defeat.

1970 Arne Robertsson came at the European Championships in Berlin (East) in the heavyweight division in Greco-Roman style after defeats against Petr Kment ( Czechoslovakia ) and József Csatári from Hungary only on the 8th place. He then ended his international wrestling career, insofar as it concerned participation in international championships, and was also not at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich at the start. At the national level, however, he struggled and finished well in some international tournaments.

In 1975 he started a comeback. The first international championship in which he took part again after his break was the European championship in the Greco-Roman style in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . But he lost both fights there and ended up in 7th place. The same thing happened to him at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . Again he lost his fights against Roman Codreanu from Romania and Richard Wolff from Germany and came in 9th place.

Arne Robertsson achieved the greatest success of his career in 1977 when he won the Greco-Roman heavyweight championship in Gothenburg behind Nikola Dinew from Bulgaria and Oleksandr Kolchynskyj from the Soviet Union, ahead of Einar Gundersen from Norway and János Rovnyai from Hungary and Prvoslav Ilic from Yugoslavia took 3rd place. Individual results from this championship are not known.

After this great success, he finally ended his international wrestling career. He won his last Swedish championship in 1980 at the age of 38. Arne Robertsson died in 1991 at the age of 49.
