Bohumil Kubát (born February 14, 1935 in Česká Třebová ; † May 12, 2016 ) was a Czechoslovak wrestler . He was a bronze medalist at the 1960 Rome Olympics in the Greco-Roman style heavyweight division.

Career

Kubát began wrestling as a teenager in 1950. After his first major successes in the national field, he moved to the TAL “Sokol” Chomutov sports club in the mid-1950s , where coach Josef Petr led him to the top of the world. He wrestled in both styles, but had Josef Růžička in Czechoslovakia before he qualified for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . In Rome, he celebrated an impressive international debut, because he won behind the former Assen Ivan Bogdan from the Soviet Union and Wilfried Dietrich from the BRD equal to the bronze medal . It is noteworthy that neither of them succeeded in defeating him, both fights ended in a draw.

At the 1961 World Cup in Yokohama , Kubát wrestled in both styles. While he had to be content with 7th place in the free style, he just missed a medal in the Greco-Roman style with 4th place. He was unable to take part in the 1962 World Cup in Toledo / USA because Czechoslovakia did not send a team there.

In the next few years he achieved many good placements at the world championships and from 1966 also at the re-introduced European championships, but could no longer win any medals. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , he only competed in free style because in Czechoslovakia, Peter Kment, an excellent heavyweight in the Greco-Roman style, had grown up and was used at international championships in this style.

Kubát made his last start in an international championship at the 1969 European championship in Modena . This was quite unfortunate for him, because he was injured in his first fight against the Swiss Rudolf Feist and had to be eliminated from the tournament. He then ended his international wrestling career.
