Career

Ragnar Svensson began wrestling in Klippan in 1951 at the age of 17 . He became a member of the Klippan Athlete Association (AB). At that time, Klippan developed into a Swedish wrestling center. Ragnar benefited from this and soon grew into the heavyweight division of the Swedish elite. Although Bertil Antonsson dominated the heavyweight wrestling event in Sweden at first , Ragnar was used from 1956 in the then very popular international matches. In the first international match he played, he wrestled right against the Soviet Olympic champion from 1956 Anatoly Parfenow , to whom he was defeated by just a few points. In 1959 he reached an excellent draw in another international match against the Soviet Union against the multiple world champion Iwan Bogdan . In the same year he wrestled in an international match against the Federal Republic of Germany against Wilfried Dietrich from Schifferstadt.

Ragnar made his international championship debut in 1958 at the Greco-Roman World Championship in Budapest . He reached a good 4th place in the heavyweight division. Although he only managed one victory at this World Cup, he was still a draw against the world-class athletes Lyutwi Dschiber Akhmedov from Bulgaria and Hamit Kaplan from Turkey .

Ragnar was also used at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . He came in 8th place in the Greco-Roman style. He lost to Wilfried Dietrich and Iwan Bogdan.

At the World Championships in Yokohama Ragner again reached 4th place in the Greco-Roman style. He fought three draws and retired after the 3rd round because he had 6 fault points.

In 1962 he was back at the World Cup in Toledo . He wrestled in both styles. In the free style he reached 5th place, in the Greco-Roman style he met the best heavyweights of that time István Kozma from Hungary and Anatoli Roschtschin from the Soviet Union , with whom he went through the full wrestling match and was only defeated on points.

At the 1963 World Cup in Helsingborg , home , Ragnar achieved his greatest success as a wrestler. He became vice world champion in the Greco-Roman style. Also at the Olympic Games in Tokyo he did well with a 5th place. After three wins he failed again to Anatoly Roschtschin.

In 1965 and 1966, Ragnar placed sixth and seventh in the international championships, but had the misfortune to meet István Kozma three times, Nikolai Shmakov twice and Anatoly Roschtschin once, which he could not defeat.

Ragnar Svensson's career came to a very good end in 1968, when he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Västerås , where he even managed to beat Soviet representative Anatoli Kochnev . At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he narrowly missed a medal with a good 4th place.

After the 1968 Olympic Games, Ragnar, who was a professional driver, retired from the sport of wrestling.
