Lyutvi Djiber Akhmedov , Bulgarian Лютви Джибер Ахмедов , (born April 10, 1930 in Podajwa , Razgrad Oblast , † 1997 ) was a Bulgarian wrestler . He was world champion in 1959 and winner of a silver medal at the 1964 Olympic Games in free style heavyweight.

Career

Lyutvi Djiber Akhmedov was a member of the Turkish minority in Bulgaria. He started wrestling in 1948, when wrestling was particularly encouraged in socialist Bulgaria. In 1952 not a single Bulgarian wrestler started at the Olympic Games in Helsinki . In 1956 Bulgaria celebrated its first Olympic wrestling champion with Nikola Stanchev . Lyutvi Djiber Akhmedov trained in the newly established training center in Razgrad.

He celebrated his first success on the international wrestling mat in 1955 when he took second place in the heavyweight category behind the Soviet wrestler Georgi Kandelaki at the 3rd World Youth Festival in Warsaw , an event controlled by the socialist states.

Lyutvi Djiber Akhmedov preferred the free style, but was occasionally also in Greco-Roman. Style at the start and also very successful in this style. So found the first world championship that he contested in Greco-Roman. Style in Budapest . He defeated there u. a. Hamit Kaplan from Turkey and wrestled with Ragnar Svensson from Sweden and Iwan Bogdan from the Soviet Union . He came in 2nd place and became vice world heavyweight champion.

In 1959 he started in the free style at the World Cup in Tehran . This world championship was relatively weak. Two wins were enough for him, one against Herbert Albrecht from Zella-Mehlis and two draws against Sawkus Dscharasow from the Soviet Union and Hamit Kaplan to win the world champion title.

Lyutvi Dzhiber Akhmedov disappointed at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . He only got one win in the heavyweight division and wrestled against János Reznák from Hungary , William Kerslake , USA a . Hamit Kaplan tied, with which he only reached 5th place and missed a medal.

In 1961 he could not start at the World Cup in Yokohama because Bulgaria did not send a wrestling team to Yokohama because of the high costs. In 1962 he was back at the World Championships in Toledo / USA. In free style he won a. a. against János Reznák and wrestled with Alexander Iwanizki from the Soviet Union and the Olympic champion from 1960 and world champion from 1961 Wilfried Dietrich from the Federal Republic of Germany . He came in second behind Iwanizki, ahead of Wilfried Dietrich.

In 1963 Lyutvi Dschiber Akhmedov was again runner-up in the heavyweight world championship in Sofia . He won it u. a. about Wilfried Dietrich. However, the world title cost him two draws against János Reznák and Alexander Iwanizki. In the same year he started in Helsingborg at the World Cup in Greco-Roman style, but only reached 6th place there. But at least he fought a draw against Wilfried Dietrich.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , he won an Olympic medal with the silver medal. He started in free style and scored four wins and one draw against Alexander Ivanitsky. Ivanizki had the better ratio of fault points and thus became Olympic champion .

In 1965 he started again in free style in the heavyweight division at the World Championships in Manchester . After four wins he drew against Larry Kristoff from the USA and Alexander Iwanizki and came in 2nd place for the fifth time at an international championship.

The last participation in an international championship of Lyutvi Dschiber Akhmedov was at the European championship in 1966 in Karlsruhe . He took an excellent 2nd place in the heavyweight division, although he had to accept a surprising point defeat by the German debutant Gerd Volz . He fought against Alexander Medvedev from the USSR in a draw.

Lyutvi Djiber Akhmedov played a total of 39 fights in his career at the Olympic Games and World Championships. He has not lost any of these 39 fights. However, out of 22 wins, he only fought 17 draws. This testifies to his defensive ring style, which was decisive for the fact that he only won once at these championships and finished second five times. Even so, Lyutvi Dzhiber Akhmedov was of course a great and successful wrestler.
