Gerd Volz
Gerd Volz (born April 21, 1944 in Oggersheim ; † March 5, 2010 in Schifferstadt ) was a German wrestler .
Career
Gerd Volz learned the trade of a coppersmith. He was married to the fencer Helga Mees . Volz began wrestling as a teenager in Friesenheim . He started in both styles, but as an adult put his main focus on the free style.
In 1963, starting for Friesenheim, he finished 3rd at the German junior championship in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division. In 1964 he was in the same style, now starting for KSV Oggersheim , German junior runner-up in the heavyweight division behind Roland Bock from Tuttlingen.
From 1967 to 1981 Gerd Volz, who went on to play for KSV Köllerbach and VfK Schifferstadt in his further career, took second place four times and third place six times at the German senior championships. But he never succeeded in becoming German single champion. The reason for this was that in the years when he was one of the top German heavyweight wrestlers, he had an unbeatable opponent in Wilfried Dietrich and in addition to Wilfried Dietrich in the Federal Republic of Germany, he also had the heavyweight Roland Bock von , who belonged to the expanded world class the Sportvg Feuerbach , Heinz Eichelbaum from Witten and Horst Schwarz from Untertürkheim as well as Lorenz Hecher and Alfons Hecher from Hallbergmoos were his competitors.
Gerd Volz won German championship titles with his team, KSV Köllerbach , in 1968 and 1972.
He started on the international wrestling mat for the first time in 1966. He went on the mat in free style in the heavyweight division at the European Championships in Karlsruhe , where he defeated the former world champion Lyutwi Dschiber Achmedow from Bulgaria and Wieslaw Bochenski from Poland . But he lost his third fight against the Turks Giyasettin Yilmaz , with which he reached the error score of 6 and had to be eliminated. But he reached a good 5th place.
He was also in 1971 at the World Cup in Sofia at the start. He lost there in the super heavyweight division against Stanislaw Makowieki from Poland and fought against Ștefan Stîngu from Romania in a draw. This meant 11th place for him.
In 1974 Gerd Volz won the European Union Cup in Glasgow , a forerunner of the EU championships, in the super heavyweight division ahead of Bradley from Great Britain and Tamassin from Italy .
Gerd Volz was also used in some international matches. In 1966 he won it a. a. over Arne Robertsson from Sweden and in 1971 he wrestled against Ștefan Stîngu from Romania.
