Helga Mees

Helga Margot Mees (born July 12, 1937 in Saarbrücken , † April 11, 2014 in Schifferstadt ) was a German fencer . She entered the Saarland as a junior in 1955 and came second in the junior world criterion.

Life

The German champion with the foil from 1960 and 1961 took part in fencing world championships from 1958 and won silver with the team in 1958 and bronze in 1959 . At the 1960 Olympic Games , she was fourth with the team.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, she moved into the final round in the individual competition, in which she was tied after the first series with the Hungarian Ildikó Rejtő and the Italian Antonella Ragno-Lonzi . The Hungarian won gold in the jump-off ahead of Mees and Antonella Ragno. In the team competition, Heidi Schmid , Gudrun Theuerkauff , Rosemarie Scherberger and Mees failed in the semifinals against the later Olympic champions from Hungary. In the small final, the Germans fought the Italians and won bronze.

Together with her teammates, she received the Silver Laurel Leaf on December 11, 1964 .

After her wedding with the wrestler Gerd Volz , she took part in the 1968 Olympic Games as Helga Volz-Mees . With the team, she finished fifth.

Helga Volz-Mees died on April 11, 2014 and was buried on April 23, 2014 in the forest cemetery in Schifferstadt .
