Osby is a place ( Tatort ) in the northeast of the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Skåne . Osby is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

history

The place name is made up of the Old Norse word "Os" for estuary and the word "By" for city. At the end of the 19th century, the place consisted of nothing more than the church and cemetery, six farms arranged around it and a few smaller farmhouses scattered around this center (in Swedish torp ). The hostel, inn and market square were located in the neighboring village of Marklunda, which was incorporated in 1970 , conveniently located on the road between Växjö and Kristianstad . After a train station on the Södra Stambanan line was built in Osby in 1862 , the population quickly increased and individual industrial and commercial operations emerged. In the same year Osby became the administrative seat of the rural municipality Osby after a local government reform. After several changes in administrative law, today's municipality with Osby as the administrative seat was established in 1971.

Osby is located in northern Skåne by Lake Osbysjön , which is crossed by the river Helge Å . The Driveån flows through the center of Osby . The closest larger towns are Hässleholm , Kristianstad and Älmhult .

Transport links

Osby is located directly on Reichsstraße 15 between Halmstad and Karlshamn. East of the city are highway 23 between Malmö and Växjö and highway 19 towards Kristianstad. Osby train station connects the city with Malmö and central Sweden.

For many years the toy manufacturer Brio (founded in 1884) was the most important company in Osby. In the meantime, however, the majority of production has been relocated to low-wage countries. The company's headquarters are now in Malmö. Only a warehouse, part of product development, a shop and a toy museum remain in Osby. The company Osby-Pannan , which manufactures boilers and washing machines , is also known in Sweden . Today the company is called Osby Parca . The furniture company IKEA, with its Swedish headquarters in nearby Älmhult, is also a major employer for the residents of Osby . The largest employer is the municipality of Osby with almost 1,000 employees.
