Ivar Bengtsson (* 1860; † 1948) grew up in Picketorp in southern Sweden . In 1884 he married Sissa Persdotter and moved with his wife in the small village of Boalt , where he held a small punnet workshop Ivar Bengtsson Korgfabrik Boalt had (Ivar Bengtsson's Basket Factory Boalt). As the company grew, the family moved to Osby in 1902 . In 1907 more than 170 different articles could be ordered. In 1908 Ivar's three sons Viktor, Anton and Emil Ivarsson took over the company, which was registered as "Bröderna Ivarsson Osby" the following year. The company grew rapidly: in 1909 the catalog included 999 different articles, in 1912 it had already 2700 with 10 permanent employees and a turnover of 155,000 Swedish kronor.

In the course of time, Brio developed into one of the most efficient toy trading companies in Scandinavia, selling wooden toys that were handcrafted in southern Sweden. The Brio trademark first appeared in 1930 on two wooden toy trucks, which at the time cost about two crowns .

In 1937, Brio became a limited company. With 150 employees, the company achieved a turnover of 4.3 million Swedish crowns.

Anton's son Lennart managed the company from 1952 to 1978 and expanded it into an international company. The world-famous Brio railway came onto the market in the mid-1950s.

In 1983 the Swedish game publisher Alga was taken over.

1984, the company founded at its headquarters in Osby BRIO Lekoseum , a toy museum where it issues its own products and those of other companies (for example, Barbie dolls and Märklin - model trains ). Visitors can also play with many of the exhibits.

In 1997 the company had over 1000 employees and sales of 1.41 billion Swedish kronor .

The Brio Group has branches in ten countries and supplies around 50 countries. While the articles are now being produced in China, Brio continues to develop and test in Osby. All over the world, Brio toys are considered particularly carefully manufactured, play-friendly and safe childhood companions. The German branch in Schwabach in Central Franconia was founded in 1974. Since then, the toy retailer has awarded her the title of “Trading Partner No. 1” three times. Many Brio toys have been awarded the game good rating .

Until 2004, Dag and Bengt Ivarsson, the sons of Lennart Ivarsson, ran the company in the fourth generation.

From 2004 the Swedish investment company Proventus was the main shareholder in Brio. The company's turnover in 2008 was EUR 27.7 million.

In 2015, the company was taken over by the German game manufacturer Ravensburger . At that time, Brio had 80 employees and had a turnover of 38 million euros.
