Älmhult (also outdated Elmhult ) is a small industrial town in Sweden and the capital of the municipality of Älmhult . Älmhult is located in the province of Kronobergs län in Småland in southern Sweden at the southern end of Lake Möckeln .
history
Älmhult grew around a once important railway junction. This is where the Södra stambanan ( Malmö - Nässjö - Falköping , part of today's Malmö - Stockholm line ), Sölvesborg-Olofströms-Elmhults Järnväg (SOEJ) (to Blekinge , now only freight transport) and now closed line to Kristianstad met .
economy
Älmhult is one of the main locations of the furniture company IKEA . The company that dominates the town opened its first furniture store here in 1958. The group subsidiaries IKEA Trading AB, IKEA IT AB, IKEA Communications AB, IKEA of Sweden AB, Swedwood AB and Modul Service AB have their main or subsidiary headquarters in Älmhult with administrative and production units as well as a distribution center . Further, Ikanobanken , a bank of Ikano Group, an offshoot of IKEA, headquartered here.
The Stena-Metall-Gruppe is represented by the headquarters of Stena Aluminum and a sales office and warehouse of Stena Stål in Älmhult.
An important locational advantage in Älmhult is still the good connection to the Swedish rail network.

Älmhult is located on the Södra stambanan , the southern trunk line Copenhagen - Malmö - Alvesta - Stockholm. There are direct connections to Helsingør in Denmark via Lund , Malmö, Copenhagen Airport , Copenhagen and to Kalmar via Växjö , which are operated by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) .
Länstrafik Kronoberg operates an urban bus route as well as regional bus connections to Växjö, among others. Skånet Nahrungsmittel buses run to Osby .
The nearest airport is Växjö / Kronoberg Airport (VXO) in Växjö.
Tourism and sightseeing
The local tourist information office helped 2,354 visitors in 2010. With 39 percent, Sweden made up the largest share, followed by German (33 percent) and Danish tourists (22 percent).
Älmhult owes many visitors to the great popularity of IKEA, because the company's first furniture store is the most important tourist destination in the municipality, according to the municipal administration. There has been an IKEA museum in the village since June 30, 2016.
The sculpture “ Stolen ” by Kaj Engström and Arne Persson in the form of a gigantic chair marks the entrance to Älmhult.
On Älmhult's central square between the train station and the municipal administration there is a statue of the famous botanist Carl von Linné , who was born in Stenbrohult ( Råshult ) near Älmhult and was created in 1946 by Carl Eldh .
