Johan Peter Mangs (born March 4, 1972 in Älmhult ) is a Swedish murderer who is said to have committed several murder attacks in Malmö , the Swedish city with the highest proportion of immigrants , for racist motives . Between 2003 and 2010 he is said to have murdered three people in Sweden's third largest city and attempted several murders, including a one-year-old child. In 2012, he was charged with two murders and four attempted murders , found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Deeds

For around a year, Mangs spread fear and terror, especially among immigrants, through his attacks, until he was caught. In autumn 2009, he shot a large-caliber rifle at migrants in Malmö for the first time . In October 2009 he fired at a car in which a 20-year-old Swede was sitting with a dark-skinned companion. The woman was killed, the man was seriously injured. In about 14 other raids, he struck from ambush. Mangs walked through the city wearing a military protective vest, armed with a weapon and cartridges. He shot people from behind as they waited at bus stops. In subsequent attacks, he would target homes and businesses with windows showing immigrants. He almost always shot a semi-automatic pistol in the dark, in most cases from behind, at men or women with dark skin.

Attacks:

  • October 10, 2009: 20-year-old Trez West Persson was shot dead in her car near Västra Skrävlinge Kyrkoväg, near a mosque in Malmö. Her 21-year-old boyfriend, a convicted dark-skinned drug dealer, is seriously injured.
  • October 23, 2009: Several shots were fired at an apartment on Hyacintgatan.
  • December 31, 2009: Shots at the mosque in Jägersrovägen. Nobody is hit directly, but an imam is injured by broken glass.
  • January 25, 2010: A 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest and a 36-year-old man in the leg. The attack took place in front of a shop on Rasmusgatan. Police suspect the 17-year-old was the target and the older man was accidentally hit.
  • March 12, 2010: A house in Hårds väg is shot at, the presumed target is the now 22-year-old, who was the target on October 10th.
  • October 21, 2010: An apartment was shot through a kitchen window. A 26-year-old woman is hit in the back and a 34-year-old in the hand.

Investigation and arrest

Presumed murder weapon Glock 19 .

At first, the police could not determine a motive because the victims were not connected to each other. In 1991 and 1992, the Swede John Ausonius , who became known as the "laser man", hunted immigrants in a similar way with his rifle and a laser rifle scope. He committed a murder in the process and was sentenced to life imprisonment after his arrest.

After the attacks in October 2010, witnesses were able to provide useful information about the escaping perpetrator for the first time. In Malmö, the police created a perpetrator profile. It was determined among other things in right-wing extremist circles.

A special police unit ( Nationella Insatsstyrkan ) arrested Mangs in his apartment in Malmö city center in November 2010. The police found weapons in his apartment, including a Glock 19 and another firearm, of which at least one weapon is said to have played a role in the attacks, according to " Expressen ". He did not resist the arrest. At the time of his arrest, according to the investigators, Mangs had already planned further attacks.

The police questioned numerous witnesses and examined e-mail and telephone directories and technical evidence. She found the key to the apartment where one of the murders took place in Mang's apartment.

Procedure

The trial against Mangs began in May 2012. In what was initially a public hearing, Mangs applied for his release. After five minutes the hearing continued behind closed doors. The police and the public prosecutor's office only briefly comment on the case when applying for arrest. The investigations into the series of attacks are ongoing at this point. At first it was unclear whether Mangs committed the acts alone and out of racist motives.

On October 23, 2012, a Swedish court found Mangs guilty of two murders and four attempted murders. Mangs denied all allegations in court. However, the prosecution brought ample evidence and testimony that seriously incriminated him. The actions of Peter Mangs are characterized by extreme brutality and an absolute lack of empathy for other people, said the prosecution in court. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2012 .

background

Mangs does not consider himself a racist. Daniel Poohl, editor-in-chief of the anti-racist Swedish magazine Expo , pointed out on Deutschlandradio that Mangs said that he had already come into conflict with people with a migration background as a child . Mangs subscribed to the magazine National heute , which was founded by the right-wing populist Sverigedemokraterna , and wrote in Internet forums about immigration and the power of the Jews. According to Poohl, Mangs is strongly anti-Semitic . After his arrest, neighbors described Mangs as a "quiet loner". According to his lawyer, Mangs composed and wrote books while in detention.

Public effect

The case of Peter Mangs caused a sensation in Sweden because Mangs could go undetected for over seven years. Many people in Sweden had doubts about the reliability and competence of the police. The Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik praised Mangs as heroes and resistance fighters against “ foreign infiltration ” and “ Islamization ”.
