Nils Jörgen Paul Ottosson , often Paul NJ Ottosson (born February 25, 1966 in Osby ) is a Swedish sound engineer . He won two Academy Awards in 2010 for his work on the film Deadly Command - The Hurt Locker . He received a third Oscar in 2013 for his sound editing in the film Zero Dark Thirty .

Life

Ottosson went to school in the small Swedish town of Hässleholm . In 1987, he and a few friends moved to Los Angeles to become professional musicians. In 1992 he got a job there in a record studio and initially worked as a sound engineer for various advertising films and music videos. Since the mid-1990s, he has appeared in more than 100 films. Initially, it was less well-known films and TV productions, but from around 2000 he also worked on larger Hollywood projects.

In 1998, Ottosson won an Emmy Award for sound editing on the episode Council of the National Geographic Explorer series . For the movies Operation Sandman (2000), Jimmy Neutron - Boy Genius (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2005) and Spider-Man 3 (2008), he was in each case for a Golden Reel Award from the Organization Motion Picture Sound Editors nominated .

At the 2005 Academy Awards , Ottosson was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Sound Editing category for his work on the film Spider-Man 2 . There were also nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and the Satellite Awards .

In 2010 he won two Academy Awards in the categories of Best Sound and Best Sound Editing for the war drama Tödliches Kommando - The Hurt Locker by director Kathryn Bigelow . Ottosson received further awards for this film at the British Academy Film Awards 2010 in the category Best Sound and the Cinema Audio Society Awards .

He received his third Oscar in 2013 for the sound editing for Kathryn Bigelows Zero Dark Thirty . However, because of a tie, Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers were also honored for James Bond 007: Skyfall .

Other well-known films in which Ottosson was responsible for the sound included. a. the blockbusters The Scorpion King , SWAT - The Special Unit , The Exorcism by Emily Rose , the first two parts of the horror film series The Grudge and the 2012 disaster film by Roland Emmerich , for which Ottosson won a Satellite Award in 2009 .
