action

Boris the Beast breaks out of a maximum security alien prison on the moon. Agent K shot off Boris' arm when he was captured in 1969, so he wants revenge and flees to Earth. There K and his partner J examine his landing site. Shortly afterwards, they are called to a Chinese restaurant, which turns out to be an ambush by Boris. After a fight, Boris claims that K is already dead but does not yet know.

J wants to know what happened between Boris and K back then. K, however, isolates himself and suspends J. J searches for Boris on the computer and receives some information. However, when he wants to dig deeper, the data is not released. Later that evening, K calls and wants to apologize. After the phone call, K disappears and a strange family suddenly lives in his apartment. J is confused. At headquarters he learns that Boris managed to escape and that K died 40 years ago. But since J can remember his partner in the present and his boss finds this strange, she suspects that the time has been manipulated. It establishes the connections. J then follows the same path as presumably the escaped Boris before: on a journey back in time to the year 1969, at the time shortly before Boris' capture.

When J tries to find Boris after his first murder, the young K appears. He arrests J and interrogates him in the 1969, but modern headquarters, and then wants to neuralize his memory with a powerful device. Shortly before the start of the procedure, however, he believes J's unusual statements and begins the search for Boris with him.

J and K seek out Agent W, alias Andy Warhol , in the factory , where they meet the Archan Griffin (the emergence of a being that actually exists in a 5-dimensional world). This predicts possible futures in parallel universes, but is never sure which future will actually occur, since in the different variants events are missing or occurring (e.g. K gives a tip or not), on which events depend in turn (satellite crosses the Orbit of an asteroid or not and destroys it), which change the course considerably (asteroid hits New York or not). They can fend off Boris' attack on Griffin, but lose sight of Griffin. You'll find him in the baseball stadium shortly afterwards. When Griffin is distracted by the two, he cannot foresee Boris' attack, who kidnaps him on a motorcycle. Boris wants to steal the object to be handed over by Griffin to K, with the help of which the planetary defense system Arcnet against Boris' race is to be installed. K and J can free Griffin.

The group decides to use the Saturn 5 , the rocket for the first moon landing, to launch the Arcnet into space. Therefore one travels to Florida to the Kennedy Space Center . The 1969 Boris, but also the Boris from the present, are on their way there. With the help of a colonel, who later turns out to be J's father, J and K make it onto the ramp a few minutes before the start. In the final battle, the agents defeat the two Borisse, but J's father is killed (and J sees himself as a child, which is why Griffin urgently recommended that he disappear immediately after the mission was completed). While J kills the present Boris, this time K does not arrest the young Boris, but kills him. So his future outbreak can no longer happen. The Arcnet is put into orbit by Apollo 11.

J gets back to the present, and other than the fact that Boris is not in Lunar Prison and K is a little kinder, nothing has changed compared to the situation before Boris' time manipulation. J thanks K for his help for him and his father 40 years ago, whereupon the latter replies that it was an honor for him.

Reviews

“One thing, however, is missing from Sonnenfeld's entertaining fun: the disarming liveliness of the two previous films. The gags are all nice, but not hilarious, and the formerly smug teasing of the dysfunctional world saver couple J and K wear off in the first quarter of an hour. In return, Will Smith once again shows his qualities as a self-deprecating leading man. His leap in time from the roof of a skyscraper is the temporary slapstick highlight of the series. Conclusion: Fast-paced and perfectly staged sci-fi adventure that sometimes takes itself too seriously and loses sight of the fun "

“In short: a successful, elegantly filmed and quickly assembled reboot with blockbuster potential. The Men in Black are firmly opposed to their retirement. "

"Original continuation of the franchise, which entertains not only with the charismatic buddy duo, but also with lovingly designed secondary characters, a funny homage to the sixties and breathtaking 3D effects."

background

Emergence

Filming took place from November 16, 2010 through April 2011 in the Bronx , Brooklyn , Central City Studio , Fire Island , Kaufman Astoria Studios , Robert Moses State Park and Sony Pictures Studios in New York City and Los Angeles . music

As in the two previous parts of the series, Danny Elfman was responsible for the score, the orchestral accompanying music. As an homage to the rock of the late 60s, he orchestrated part 3 a. a. expanded to include electric guitar-heavy variations of his well-known main theme. After Will Smith contributed the theme songs for the first two MIB films, this time the American rapper Pitbull took over . Director Barry Sonnenfeld selected him to produce the theme song after his 19-year-old daughter started playing his music. On March 26, 2012, the title song Back in Time was released.

Video game

The video game for the film was developed by FUN Labs and distributed by Activision . It's called MIB: Alien Crisis and isn't about Agent K or Agent J , but about a new MIB agent named Peter Delacoeu.

There is also a game developed by Gameloft for iOS, Android smartphones and tablets. In these, the player builds his own agency and receives orders from Agent K, Agent J and other actors from the Men-in-Black films.

reception

On the opening weekend, 423,956 visitors saw the film in Germany. The total number of visitors amounted to over 2.25 million, which corresponds to a box office result of around 20.9 million euros (the equivalent of around 26.3 million US dollars). In total, the film has grossed over US $ 624 million worldwide to date, including US $ 445 million outside the United States. This makes the third part the most successful in the series.

continuation

In May 2013 Sony announced that it had commissioned Oren Uziel to draft a sequel script. Ultimately, the screenplay for Men in Black: International was written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum and directed by F. Gary Gray . The film was released in June 2019 with Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth as the two new leading actors Agent M and Agent H. Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson also play in other roles .
