The twice divorced policeman Gene Reardon is raising a minor daughter who is by the second marriage. When an entrepreneur is kidnapped, Reardon is tasked with maintaining contact with the FBI. The FBI investigation is headed by Wallis P. Longsworth, Reardon's first wife.

The kidnappers demand one million US dollars. It seems strange to Reardon that the kidnappers claim to have found out about an attempt to register the banknote numbers. When the victim is found dead near Reardon's house, he is suspected of being one of the kidnappers. His ex-wife is committed to him.
