Nikolai Michailowitsch Schmakow (Russian: Николай Шмаков ; * 1936 ?; † 1993 ) was a Soviet wrestler and world heavyweight champion in 1965 in the Greco-Roman style.
Career
Nikolai Shmakov began as a teenager with rings . He belonged to the sports organization Spartak and was a heavyweight since the mid-1950s, exclusively in the Greco-Roman. Style rang. Around 1960 Iwan Bogdan dominated the action on the mat in the heavyweight class in the Soviet Union , who was last world champion in 1961 . Nikolai Schmakow fought with Anatoli Roschtschin and Anatoli Kochnev for his successor. This duel was ultimately won by Anatoly Roschtschin, but from 1965 to 1967 Nikolai Schmakow also came to several appearances at international championships and even became world heavyweight champion in Tampere in 1965 . The fact that he no longer won international titles was due on the one hand to the Hungarian newcomer István Kozma , who defeated Nikolai Schmakow at the 1966 World Cup in Toledo / USA and at the European Championships in Minsk and relegated to 2nd place in each case and, on the other hand, as already mentioned, to Anatoly Roschtschin, who was the best heavyweight wrestler in the Soviet Union from 1968.
Nikolai Schmakow first drew attention to himself in 1961 with his victory in the heavyweight division at the Spartakiade of the trade unions. In the same year he was also the third winner of the Soviet championship behind Ivan Bogdan and Anatoly Roschtschin. He became champion of the Soviet Union in 1965.
