Oleksandr Leonidowytsch Kolchynskyj (Russian Alexander Leonidowitsch Kolchinski ; born February 20, 1955 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ; † July 16, 2002 in Kiev, Ukraine ) was a Soviet wrestler .

Career

Oleksandr Kolchynskyj began wrestling at an early age and was soon very successful. At the age of 16 in 1971 he was runner-up in youth wrestling in the class over 87 kg. He repeated this success in 1973 and in 1974 he became Junior World Champion. Around this time he joined the Soviet Army and was stationed in Kiev , where he trained in the Army Sports Club. His trainer was J. Wilenski. At the beginning of his international career, the young athlete only weighed around 105 kg with a height of 1.93 m, but over the years increased this weight to around 120 kg. It was used internationally as early as 1975. His greatest successes were the Olympic victories in 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow , where he both times before the multiple world champion Aleksandar Tomov from Bulgaria won. Oleksandr Kolchynskyj was a very agile and fast wrestler who dominated most of his competitors.

After the end of his active wrestling career, Oleksandr Kolchynskyj was an officer in the Soviet Army. He later worked as a businessman and was sentenced to a prison term for extortion in 1994, only part of which, however, because he was pardoned by President Leonid Kuchma in 1996 .
