Rangel Gerowski
Rangel Gerowski (born January 15, 1958 in Karlovo , Plovdiv Oblast , † April 26, 2004 ) was a Bulgarian wrestler . He was winner of a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games and European champion in 1981 in the Greco-Roman style super heavyweight.
Career
Rangel Gerowski started wrestling as a teenager. After his initial successes in the national field, he was delegated to the top Bulgarian club Levski Spartak Sofia . He was accepted into the Bulgarian national wrestling team at the junior level. He was a stocky and very strong wrestler who always wrestled in the super heavyweight category, i.e. in the weight class between 100 kg and 130 kg body weight, and concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style. In the national team he was coached by Bobe Dorosiew, Petar Ilkov, Dinko Petrow and Andrei Dimitrov.
In 1976, at the age of eighteen, he started for the first time in an international championship, the European Junior Championship (Espoirs = age group up to the age of 20) in Poznan . In the super heavyweight division, he won ahead of the Soviet athlete Osadse and Klaus Zindel from the GDR . In the same year he was also the Balkan champion in the super heavyweight division among seniors.
In 1977 he finished at the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Las Vegas in the super heavyweight category behind the Soviet athlete Beloglasow. Also at the European Junior Championships in Oulu in 1978 he had to admit defeat to a Soviet athlete, Ivan Karapetjan, and came in second behind him. But in 1979 he won in Haparanda then still the world title in the junior super heavyweight before Ivan Karapetyan and László Tóth from Hungary .
In 1978 and 1979 Rangel Gerowski also competed at the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic of Germany in Aschaffenburg . In 1978 he came in third behind Awtandil Maisuradse from the USSR and Victor Dolipschi from Romania and in 1979 he only had to admit defeat to the reigning world champion Oleksandr Kolchynskyj from the Soviet Union and was behind him, but ahead of the world class wrestlers Marek Galiński from Poland as well Roman Codreanu and Victor Dolipschi from Romania took 2nd place.
Despite these excellent results, it was very difficult for Rangel Gerowski to reach the top of the super heavyweight division in Bulgaria . The reason was that Bulgaria had two super heavyweights in Alexandar Tomow and Nikola Dinew , who had both become world and European champions several times and were among the top super heavyweight wrestlers in the world at the time.
In 1981 he was used at the European Championships in Gothenburg , where he demonstrated his skills. He defeated Karl Hug from Germany , Tomas Johansson from Sweden , Henryk Tomanek from Poland and Ewgeni Artjuchin from the USSR and became European champion . Nevertheless, he was not allowed to take part in the 1981 World Cup. The Bulgarian Wrestling Association put Nikolai Dinew there. Also in the years 1982 to 1984 Alexandar Tomow and Nikolai Dinew were always preferred to Rangel Gerowski at the international championships.
Rangel Gerowski therefore only started his next international championship in 1985. He came in second at the European Championships in Leipzig behind Igor Rostorozki from the USSR. At the world championship of the same year in Kolbotn , a suburb of Oslo , he lost again to Igor Rostorozki and took 3rd place behind him and the Romanian Ioan Grigoraş .
At the international championships in 1986 Nikola Dinew was again preferred over Angel Gerowski. At the European Championships in 1987 in Tampere and the World Championships in 1987 in Clermont-Ferrand , he was back at the start. At both events he won the bronze medal in the super heavyweight division behind Igor Rostorozki and the Swede Tomas Johansson .
In 1988 Rangel Gerowski was used at the Olympic Games in Seoul . He was very well prepared for this event and certainly fought his way to the final for the gold medal . There he first met a young Soviet wrestler who was to dominate the action in the super heavyweight class of Greco-Roman wrestlers for the next few years, Alexander Karelin . Rangel Gerowski fought very courageously against Karelin and left him only a narrow 5: 3 point win. He won an Olympic silver medal and the respect of all wrestling friends.
In the course of his further career, Rangel Gerowski won three medals at international championships. In 1990 he was defeated on points by Alexander Karelin in Poznan in the final battle, and was vice- European champion . At the World Cup in Rome in 1990 he was shouldered by Alexander Karelin and reached 3rd place behind him and Tomas Johansson and at the 1991 World Cup in Varna he also came in 3rd behind Alexander Karelin and the American Matt Ghaffari .
At the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1992 he finished only 5th and at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he lost in the first round against László Klauz from Hungary, which meant he was eliminated and only finished in 11th place. Even in his last participation in an international championship, the 1994 World Cup in Tampere , Rangel Gerowski remained without a win and only came in 15th place.
Then he ended his wrestling career. In 1999 he took part in a Bulgarian film about his compatriot Dan Kolow , who was a famous professional wrestler before the First World War . Angel Gerowski died in 2004 at the age of only 46.
