László Klauz

László Klauz (born November 6, 1961 in Győr , † March 28, 2013 ) was a Hungarian wrestler . He was vice world champion in 1989 in Greco-Roman style in the super heavyweight division.

Career

László Klauz grew up in Budapest and started wrestling there in 1973. He belonged to the sports club "Csepel" SE Budapest . At a height of 1.94 meters, László Klauz quickly grew into the super-heavyweight, which at that time reached a body weight of 130 kg. In Hungary there were several good wrestlers in his weight class at the beginning of the 1980s, such as B. János Rovnyai , József Balla , László Köfalvi and József Nagy . For this reason, it took until 1986 before he could start in an international championship. The fact that he was only able to become the Hungarian champion for the first time in 1987 indicates this strong competition.

In 1986 he was at the world championship in his native Budapest in the Greco-Roman style of super heavyweight at the start. His debut succeeded Klauz excellent because he won behind the Swede Tomas Johansson and Soviet athlete Vladimir Grigoryev , the bronze medal . He was able to fully confirm this good performance at a World Cup tournament in Oak Lawns, USA. He finished second there behind the Soviet wrestler Igor Rostorozki , leaving Duane Koslowski and Arturo Diaz from Cuba behind.

In 1987 it was enough for László Klauz at the European Championships in Tampere only to 6th place. At the world championship in the same year, György Kékes was therefore preferred to him. It was the same at the European Championships in 1988. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , however, László Klauz was used again, who competed in both styles. In the Greco-Roman style he achieved a good 5th place, in the free style he just missed the bronze medal with 4th place.

From 1988 László Klauz fared at all international championships in the Greco-Roman style, in which he took part in the following years, like all other super heavyweights: as soon as the Soviet athlete Alexander Karelin , who was a frequent starter, took part, he placed behind him , because Karelin was unbeatable until 2000.

In 1989 László Klauz celebrated the greatest success of his career. In Martigny / Switzerland he became vice world champion in Greco-Roman style behind Alexander Karelin. In the final against Karelin he managed to go through the full fighting time and only lose 7-0 points. To be beaten by Karelin only on points was an outstanding achievement for all wrestlers back then, as he usually shouldered his opponents quickly.

In the years that followed, Klauz competed in several world and European championships until 1993, several times even in both styles. He was always among the top six winners. In 1992 he just missed the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Barcelona with 4th place in the Greco-Roman style.

At the beginning of 1994 László Klauz resigned from international wrestling.
