Rörstrand
Rörstrand is a Swedish porcelain manufacturer that has been producing porcelain and ceramics without interruption since 1726 . Rörstrand employed some of the most important designers of Scandinavian porcelain.
History of the manufacture
The Rörstrand manufactory was founded in 1726 in the town of the same name, today's Stockholm district of Birkastan. A subsidiary called Arabia was established in Finland in 1873 to enable trade with Russia. In 1881, Rörstrand began manufacturing feldspar porcelain, the type of porcelain most similar to the original from China. In 1914 Rörstrand acquired Göteborgs Porslinsfabrik . In 1926 Rörstrand moved to Gothenburg and the factory in Stockholm was demolished (the former porcelain heap has been preserved as a national monument, the coordinates point to this point). In 1936 Rörstrand moved to Lidköping , which was the company's headquarters from 1939. In 1963 Rörstrand became part of the Upsala Ekeby group. In 1984 the Finnish group Wärtsilä bought Rörstrand and three years later Gustavsberg's porcelain factory . In 1990 the Finnish Hackman Group took over and from 2000 the company was called Designor Oy Ab. In 2003 Rörstrand became part of Iittala based in Höganäs (Sweden), which in turn has belonged to Fiskars since 2007 . Since there was only a loss in production in Sweden, Iittala relocated production to Sri Lanka and Hungary at the beginning of 2005 . The factory in Lidköping was converted into the Rörstrand Center . In addition to shops and eateries, it also houses a museum that shows the history of Rörstrand.
At the original site of the factory in Stockholm, there is still a porcelain heap made of sorted and broken porcelain. The heap is a listed building .
