Fiskars Oyj Abp is a Finnish manufacturer of handicraft tools (mainly knives, axes and scissors) and boats.

history

The company was founded in 1649 by two Dutch merchants in the small village called Fiskars in the southern Finnish municipality of Raseborg . In the beginning, Fiskars made steel nails, hooks and metal wheels. The company was expanded and transformed into a manufacturing machine with its own blast furnace. With its high quality iron ore, the company - and the village - quickly became famous for the quality of their steel and the products made from it. At that time steam engines , household utensils, candlesticks, forks and scissors were made. The first scissors were made 130 years ago and were made of solid steel . In addition, Fiskars has now also manufactured lock gates and plows.

Hydropower for the operation of hammer mills and machines as well as the deep-water port for loading products by ship in Fiskars were locational advantages that contributed to the rapid expansion of the company. The place is therefore still known as the “ Solingen of Finland”. Most of the old production facilities in Fiskars are now museum and exhibition grounds and are open to the public all year round.

Fiskars Corporation is a public company based in Helsinki, Finland.

Fiskars also manufactures aluminum boats under the Buster brand , which are primarily used as fishing boats, work boats and lifeboats. The Danish cutlery manufacturer and purveyor to the court Raadvad, founded in 1758, was also taken over by Fiskars .

In 2000 the Herford company Ebert was taken over, where plastic articles for the garden, balcony and household were manufactured. After the takeover, the range was expanded to include cutters for the garden, household appliances and handicraft items. Around the same time, the British planter manufacturer Sankey was taken over. The two business areas were merged in 2012 under the new Ebersankey brand. Thus Herford was the central administration, logistics and production location for all Fiskars business activities in Central Europe. The Herford location was closed at the end of 2016 and the Ebertsankey brand was sold to the Dutch Elho Group. The company headquarters was relocated to Eschborn in Hesse (near Frankfurt am Main).

Royal Copenhagen has been part of the Fiskars Group since 2012 .

Product innovation and design

Fiskars products are characterized by progressive details such as hardened, non-stick coated blades made of carbon steel with a hardness of 58 HRC , almost permanent connections between ax heads and handles, as well as handles made of glass fiber reinforced plastic ( fiberglass reinforced polyamide ) with above average durability . The handle is weatherproof, break and impact resistant.

Awards

The rose grasping scissors from Fiskars received the iF product design award in 2008 . The redesigned ax series was awarded the German Design Award in silver in 2012.
