Jörgen Meyer

Jörgen Meyer (born December 16, 1906 in Lidköping ; lost February 1975 in the Pacific Ocean ) was a German single-handed sailor .

Meyer grew up in Wismar , he was a chemist and director of the Jülich sugar factory . He took his first sailing course in 1967 at the age of 61.

Meyer made his first 351 day circumnavigation of the world from 1971 to 1972. Stops were Panama , Port Moresby and Cape Town , he was 310 days at sea and 41 days on land. At that time he was the oldest circumnavigator and the fastest on this route. For this trip he received the Trans-Ocean Prize in 1972 .

When attempting his second circumnavigation, he wanted to sail around the world without stopping, this time to the east. His last sign of life is a telegram from Tasmania dated February 2, 1975. On the way from there to Cape Horn , he is missing.
