Ax god

The rock carvings by Lilla Flyhov are located about 15 kilometers northeast of the Swedish city of Lidköping near the town of Husaby .

The rock carvings discovered in 1889 comprise around 450 figures on an area of one hectare. Stylistically, the incisions belong to the Tanum group. The special thing about Lilla Flyhov is the multitude of different motifs that cover almost the entire range ( soles of the feet , wheels, wheel crosses , bowls and ships). The most famous figure represents a man with a large ax and is called the " ax god of Lilla Flyhov". Axes of this type are known from archaeological finds and can be dated to the Bronze Age (around 1500–1000 BC). Therefore, these rock carvings are also dated to this period.
