The hobby horse riding is a custom, the Lower Saxon city of Osnabrück to the peace agreement of 1648 to the end of the Thirty Years' War recalls.

The peace festival took place for the first time on October 22, 1948 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, which was sealed in Osnabrück and Münster . Since 1953, mostly children have been riding every year around October 25th, the day of the proclamation of peace, pupils of the fourth grade from Osnabrück with hobby horses to the town hall, after in the early years only boys were there. The move is connected with a children's festival in the center of the old town.

history

The custom of hobby horse riding in Osnabrück is based on a legend from Nuremberg . Then in 1650, during the Nuremberg execution day, boys rode their hobby horses to Prince Octavio Piccolomini , who was the delegation of Emperor Ferdinand III. and asked him for a souvenir of peace. He had historically documented square silver coins minted showing boys on hobby horses on one side.

The poets Clara and Emmy von Dincklage picked up on this legend in their story book for the youth of 1875 and moved the location to Osnabrück. At the suggestion of the Osnabrück writer and cultural historian Ludwig Bäte , hobby horse riding became an Osnabrück tradition. At first it was a special privilege of the Osnabrück boys , as it was called in the local history for the schools of the city of Osnabrück and the Osnabrück region from 1956. Finally, more and more girls took part; Since the mid-1970s, hobby horse riding has been organized for all pupils in Osnabrück's fourth grade school.

The children ride with self-made hobby horses and colorful paper hats to the town hall of Osnabrück, in whose historic town hall the peace treaty of 1648 was signed. The procession is led by town whistles. The children are received by the mayor of the city and presented with sweet pretzels on the steps of the town hall. The song of the hobby horse riders was composed for the children's festival, which begins with the line We riders go through Osnabrück and sing for peace .

Also in the American city of Evansville (Indiana) , with which Osnabrück maintains friendly contacts, in 1998, in the 350th year of the return of the Peace of Westphalia, a hobby horse ride was held at the Oktoberfest for the German population. To this end, students from Osnabrück traveled to Evansville.

From October 6th to October 29th, 2004 the exhibition "On the history of the Osnabrück hobby horse riding" was shown in the Dreikronenhaus in Osnabrück.

In front of the Osnabrück town hall , a bronze hobby horse memorial, created by the Osnabrück sculptor Hans Gerd Ruwe , was installed, which is now in front of the Katharinenkirche .
