Ödön Zombori
Ödön Zombori (born September 16, 1906 in Szenta , † November 29, 1989 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian wrestler .
Career
Ödön Zombori began wrestling as a teenager in Budapest . He came from a family in which several members devoted themselves to wrestling. His brother Gyula was also an excellent wrestler and vice-European champion in 1930 in the Greco-Roman welterweight style. Ödön belonged to the Magyar Atlétikai Club (MAC) Budapest .
Ödön first appeared on the international wrestling mat at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam . He came in the bantamweight, Greco-Roman style, to three points wins, but then retired from Italy after a defeat against Giovanni Gozzi and took a good 5th place. At the European Championships in Dortmund in 1929 , he won two points in the Greco-Roman style and was eliminated again after one defeat, this time against Svend Martinsen from Norway , because he had scored 5 fault points.
In 1930 he started at the European Championships in Stockholm in the Greco-Roman style featherweight and won his first medal. After two victories, this time he failed due to the famous Kustaa Pihlajamäki from Finland . At the European Championships in Prague in 1931 , Ödön only reached the ungrateful 4th place in the featherweight in Greco-Roman style. But in the same year he took part for the first time at the European Championships in his native Budapest in free style and won the European Championship there in a superior style.
So Ödön drove to the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles with great hopes . He disappointed in the Greco-Roman style when he had to retire after two defeats, but won the silver medal in the free style in the bantamweight division. In the final he was defeated by the outstanding Robert E. Pearce from the USA. At the European Championships in Helsinki in 1933 , Ödön finally won a title in the Greco-Roman style. He won the bantamweight division despite a point defeat against Herman Tuvesson from Sweden . The second bantamweight title win that same year in Paris made 1933 one of the most successful years of his career.
1934 Odon in Rome Vice European champion bantamweight, Greco-Roman style, after a new defeat against Hermann Tuvesson. In 1935 he was eliminated from the European Featherweight Championship in the Greco-Roman style in Copenhagen after defeats in the first two rounds without winning a medal. For the European championship in free style, he could not qualify because he had lost in the Hungarian championship against Ferenc Tóth in the featherweight division.
After the bad performance at the European Championships in 1935 , not much was expected of him at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , for which he had trained again in the bantamweight division, especially since he was already 32 years old. Ödön taught his critics better, however, because he was with five wins, including four shoulders and one defeat to Hermann Tuvesson, against whom he simply could not win, thanks to his victory over the American Ross Flood , who in turn had defeated Tuvesson and thanks to his four shoulder victories, Olympic champion.
After these Olympic Games, Ödön Zombori ended his wrestling career. He survived the war in Budapest and in 1948, shortly before the Communists came to power in Hungary, emigrated to the USA, where he lived for over forty years and is buried in Glendale .
