Svend Martinsen

Sven Johan Osvald "Svend" Martinsen (born September 28, 1900 in Finland , † August 9, 1968 in Tune, Østfold district ) was a Norwegian wrestler . He was European champion in 1929 in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight.

Career

Svend Martinsen was born in Finland to Norwegian parents . His parents returned to Norway soon after he was born. He became a member of the sports club Turn- o. Idrettslager National Sarpsborg and started wrestling there as a teenager. After 1918 he was soon one of the best Norwegian wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style in the light weight classes of bantam and featherweight.

In 1924 he was sent to the Olympic Games in Paris . He achieved two wins there in the bantamweight division, but had to retire after two defeats in the 3rd and 4th round and came in 11th place. His next start at an international championship, he completed only in 1927 at the European championship in Budapest . Svend even won three fights this time, but narrowly missed the medal ranks due to defeats against European champion Armand Magyar from Hungary and the strong Giovanni Gozzi from Italy .

At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , Martinsen only finished 11th again. He had the misfortune to face the later Olympic champion Kurt Leucht from Germany in the second round and the very strong Hungarian Ödön Zombori in the third round , against whom he lost.

Svend's sporting breakthrough came at the 1929 European Championships in Dortmund . Starting in bantamweight he defeated the Dane Erland Nielsen , the Czechs Antonín Nič and Ödön Zombori in the Greco-Roman style and with these victories he won the European title.

From 1930 Svend started in featherweight. He also got along very well in this weight class, like the runner-up European title in Stockholm in 1930 , where he was only defeated by Kustaa Pihlajamäki from Finland, and 3rd place at the European Championships in 1933, where he was again against Kustaa Pihlajamäki and against Wolfgang Ehrl from Germany defeated, proved.

It was annoying for Svend Martinsen that Norway did not send wrestlers to the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles .
