List of re-tracked railway lines

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Railroad tracks are re- gauged for a number of reasons , including:

  • Often narrow-gauge railways are switched to standard gauge . The main reason for building narrow-gauge railways was that they were easier to build than standard- gauge railways . Due to the smaller track width , lower axle loads, curve radii and speeds, the construction costs could be reduced. However, the narrow-gauge railways reached their limits in terms of economic expansion. The goods produced could only be transported easily, i.e. without reloading, in the area of the company's own narrow-gauge network, since further travel was only possible with a different gauge. Remedial action by running a rolling vehicle was too cumbersome and too cost-intensive in the long run, and the clearance profile and load-bearing capacity of main railways also had to be achieved for this.
  • The few broad-gauge railway lines operated in states with standard gauge were often soon adjusted to the respective standard gauge. The most common reason for this was the inadequate interchangeability of vehicles.
  • In the nineteenth century, when previously independent large networks met, the decision was often made to use a common track gauge because of the desired transition of vehicles. Examples of this are the large-scale gauging of the Great Western Railway in England or the 5 'railways in the USA.

Re-gauging due to war events are not included in the following list.

Baden-Württemberg
Mannheim-Haltingen 1600 1435 264.3 1840-1851 1854-1855 The Baden railway lines were laid out in 1600 mm wide gauge from 1843. After it turned out that all neighboring countries preferred the standard gauge, the Badische Staatsbahn converted the lines that had been created up until then (79 km one and 203 km double-track) to standard gauge within just one year 1854/55.

In the southern states, the broad gauge of 1524 mm (5 English feet) was initially widespread. When converting to standard gauge, at the objection and request of the Pennsylvania Railroad , which used a gauge of 4 ft 9 in (1448 mm), which differed slightly from the standard gauge, it was decided to use this dimension instead of the usual English dimension of 4 ft 8.5 in ( 1435 mm). On Monday, May 31, 1886, tens of thousands of workers moved the west rail of the broad gauge tracks inwards by 76 mm within 36 hours. At the same time, after a long period of preparation, the wheels, axles and brakes on the vehicles were re-tracked everywhere.
